Principal Notes                                                 January 12, 2017
Dear Families,

We are pleased to announce that we will be adding an afternoon K4 class for the 2017-18 school year, beginning in September, 2017. This will be in addition to our current K4 full day and half day morning program options. With the growing demand for our K4 program, we want to be able to accommodate our parish families who might be interested in this new afternoon option. As a result, our K3 program for the 2017-18 school year will be offered from 7:45-10:45 am, and our K4 afternoon program will be offered from 11:40am-2:40pm. We will have more information on this exciting opportunity in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we ask for your assistance in helping us spread the word to families, friends and neighbors who might be interested.

It's hard to believe, but Friday, January 20th marks the end of the 2nd quarter.  We are already halfway through the school year. Conferences are Thursday, February 9th. This conference is not required. A request can be made by you, the parent or the teacher.  Dismissal is at 11:00 am that day, and conferences are from 2:00-7:00 pm. A Signup Genius will be coming soon.

We started MAP testing this week. Results will be emailed shortly after completion of the tests.

Catholic Schools Week is not far away. It is scheduled for the last week in January. This year's theme is "Catholic Schools, Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service". We have many things planned, watch for more details coming home soon.   We will begin with our annual Chili Chomp and Book Fair on Friday night, January 27th.  Our Open House will be on Sunday, January 29th from 8:00-12:30p.m. Please plan on stopping by to visit your child's classroom and our Jr. High Science Fair.  The Boy Scouts will be serving a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria from 8:00-11:00. Come join us! We will be giving tours to prospective families, please consider volunteering to be a tour guide.  Please encourage any family who is interested in coming to St. Mary's to attend.  We have openings in every grade. You are our best marketing tool, help us spread the word.  Please see below for more information.

Please help us out.  We are looking for students to participate in the various ministries for the weekend Masses on Open House weekend, January 28th and 29th.  Click on this link for more information.

*Monday, January 16-NO SCHOOL-The teachers  have an in-service day.  We will be working on our accreditation for next year.

After completing a reading log verifying six hours of reading, students earn a free ticket to Six Flags Great America. Please see the links to print the reading log and parent letter. 7th grade Girl Scout Silver Award
The Girl Scouts in seventh grade, Sarah Winkler, Sofia Spano, and Isabella Kim, are trying to earn their Silver Award! One of the prerequisites is to do a journey. Journeys have many topics, and Troop 4398 chose air pollution. One of the major causes of air pollution is smoking, so that's what they decided to stop!
New Year's Resolution: Stop smoking! Your children and pets are less likely to get cancer, you will save at least two thousand dollars a year, and you will live up to ten years longer. So don't be one of the half a million people that die per year from smoking, and quit!
Thank you for reading, and if anyone you know smokes, let them know that they are endangering many lives, and if they stop, let us know! Finally, if you need any more information, there are many websites to go to, for example, http://no-smoke.org/.
From donations and well-earned cookie money, we are putting up a billboard! It will promote anti-smoking, but we are still in our first stages.

Talent Show
All students K-8 that wish to share their gift of music may sign-up to perform in the annual SMV Talent Show on Thursday, February 2nd at 1 p.m. Attached to virtual backpack is the sign-up sheet.  I will be handing these sign-up sheets out in music class as well. Please turn them in to Mrs. Dubinski by Thursday, January 19th. There will not be any formal auditions but the students must have practiced and be prepared before performing in the talent show.  I will be previewing all of the acts sometime during school hours the weeks before the show.  The musical talents of the students at this school continue to impress me so I look forward to a great show!

Chess
Chess will be offered at SMV through Chess Scholars this year. It will be on Fridays after school for seven weeks beginning January 13th. Please see the attached flyer for more information. I will continue to work with DJ Richlen to have a competitive team as well. We will meet on Sunday afternoons to have practice for the competitive players, and we will attend the All-Catholic Meet at MU on Saturday, March 11th and the Grade Level Meet at UWM on Saturday, April 4th. Please sign up here  https://goo.gl/forms/VErpQM4lhevbx7iu1  if you are interested in the SMV Chess Team. Questions? Email me at  brigidharmeyer@me.com

Basketball Concession Stand Update
Remember when we were all so excited that the basketball games and therefore concession duties were canceled on Dec. 17? Well those games have been rescheduled. And even more games than were initially canceled have been rescheduled at St. Mary's. That means that some families will be assigned additional concession shifts. Those families assigned the new shifts will receive emails later today. Sorry.

On a brighter note, the basketball tournament that was supposed to be held at St. Mary's this weekend has been canceled, so there's that!

Losing a loved one can be one of the most difficult, painful things we experience in our lives.  To help people through their grief journey, St. Mary's offers a 12 week "Good Grief" Support Group led by Certified Grief Counselor, Deacon Tom Binder. Previous participants have experienced significant healing and have rediscovered peace, joy and love in their lives.
If you're ready to move forward in your grief journey and smile again, why not join our Good Grief Support Group?  Perhaps you could suggest Good Grief to a relative or friend. Sessions will be held on  Wednesday mornings, March 8 through May 24, in the Atrium Library, from 10-11:30 am.
Class size is limited. Registration is required. Contact Mary Sue at the Parish Office, 262-782-4575  or msprotz@stmaryeg.org.
