Social Work Month is March 2017 Social Workers Stand Up!
NASW will launch a "Social Workers Stand Up" campaign during Social Work Month in March 2017. The campaign will focus on educating the public about how social workers stand up for others, including some of the most vulnerable people in our society, and make positive contributions to society. The campaign will also highlight the importance of the social work title, and why getting the assistance of an educated and licensed social worker is so important. Look for more details about the campaign to be posted
here.

PQRS/MIPS Update
PQRS is being replaced with the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) as a result of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA).
It is not scheduled to include LCSWs until 2019.
NASW National has informed us that as of the 2017 Final Regulations, Medicare providers do have an opt-out option if their practice meets one of 2 criteria:
- They receive less than or equal to $30,000 in Medicare reimbursements per year, or
- They see 100 or fewer Medicare clients per year.
Of course, with a new Administration, these criteria may change.
Please watch NASW-NJ's newsletters - newSWire™ and FOCUS - for more details as we learn new information.
This will include how to sign up for the new Medicare program as well as how to opt out.

Psychotherapy Scam Warning
We've learned of a scam circulating in Connecticut involving a couple seeking marital therapy while vacationing there. There have also been reports of a teen visiting who wants individual therapy during her stay. The payment arrangements are always complicated and therapists who responded lost money in the bank transactions.
NASW-CT has put out this message: "We caution our members to ask lots of questions and be very cautious if contacted by someone seeking temporary therapy while in Connecticut." Our advice is not to engage these requests whether they come by email or phone.
In addition, always be careful about providing social work services to clients who are from another state. In addition to risking money, you may be violating licensing laws of another jurisdiction. Consider ethics courses from our Continuing Education Online Institute (
www.naswwa.inreachce.com/) including a presentation by Dr. Frederic Reamer on
Practicing Social Work in an Electronic World: Ethical and Risk-Management Issues.

Mental Health Parity Update
Legislation affecting insurance for mental health and addiction will be introduced in the coming weeks in the New Jersey Legislature. Two Democratic Senators, Joseph Vitale and Robert Gordon, are being joined as co-prime sponsors of the bill by Republican Thomas Kean, the Senate Minority Leader. The bill will apply the standards of a federal law that requires insurers to provide coverage for behavioral health at the same level they do for physical illnesses.
