40 Years in Real Estate: Then & Now

Fresno Chamber ribbon cutting to celebrate 40 years of Stumpf and Company being in business and 30 years at our location.

As we wrap up 2017 - marking 40 years in business! - I want to reflect on how different real estate was when I started Stumpf and Company in 1977 compared to now.

On Marketing...

1977 - Advertising a property for sale or lease involved putting an ad in the newspaper and putting up a sign. I would mail out postcards of my listings to Fresno and Madera Counties property owners.

2017 - Today's marketing includes advertising properties on dozens of listing websites, social media, multi-page flyers, virtual tours, professional photos and so much more. A sign is still the greatest form of advertisement. And, yes, I still get calls from property owners who have been getting my direct mailers for decades.

On Communication...

1977 - Business was conducted face-to-face, on a landline, or through snail mail. Fax machines weren't even a thing. It was a lot easier to leave work at the office!

2017 - With smart phones, people may feel expected to be accessible at all times, even on vacation.

On Paperwork...

1977 - At that time, the standard real estate contract was switching from 1 page to 2 pages.

2017 - I'm not surprised when I get a real estate contract 40 pages long on my desk.

On Interest Rates...

1977 - Investors thought they were getting a good deal at 9.5% interest rate.

2017 - Some investors think interest rates increasing by 1/2 %  is outrageous.

On Being a Business Owner...

1977 - I started Stumpf and Company when I was 26 years old. When people heard where I worked, they asked if my dad owned the business.

2017 - When people hear I still work at Stumpf and Company, they ask when I'm going to retire. I happily tell them I'll never retire...but I do take more vacations these days.
