Not for wimps! In pursuit of the puck, Taylor Doherty of the San Jose Sharks receives a hard check in the back and is sent sprawling by Kyle Clifford of the Los Angeles Kings. Ed Jay - PBR - 2014
I feel a headache coming on! The Professional Bull Riders (PBR.com), an international professional bull riding organization based in Pueblo, Colorado, visited Oracle Arena on September 26 and 27, much to the delight of western aficionados and their families. Riders attempted to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds, which when viewed from the grandstands seemed like an eternity. (It was, as few succeeded. See above.) Memorable Sports Moment
Richard Lupoff - resized

Every fan's dream

--Richard Lupoff

Richard Lupoff waited 70 years! On Sept. 6 Richard threw out the first pitch at the Oakland A's versus Houston Astros game at O.co Coliseum and it was a dream come true. Richard received the honor in recognition of his longtime love affair with the A's, dating back to 1943, when he saw his first A's game in Philadelphia. Richard has written two dozen novels and more than 40 short stories and is also a contributor to the Ultimate Sports Guide

Here is how Richard recalls the experience ...

Credit goes to my younger son, Tom. He got in touch with the A's and said, "My dad has been an A's fan since he was little kid and saw them play in Philadelphia in 1943. That's 70 years. Do you think that deserves some recognition?"

Now bear in mind, I didn't know anything about this until one morning last week. Phone rings, it's Tom, and he asks, "Dad, can you still throw a baseball sixty feet six inches?" I said I could. He said, "Well, then, you throw out the first pitch next Friday."

And I did. No problem with the sixty-and-six, but it was the first time I ever threw off a mound. I didn't want to fling the ball over the catcher's head and over-compensated and threw a one-bouncer.

The strangest part of the experience was this: I'd been apprehensive for several days in advance, frightened that I'd disgrace myself in front of 20,000 spectators. But the instant I set foot on the infield grass I became totally calm and focused. I think this is what real athletes call "being in a zone."

The 20,000 people in the stands disappeared. Everybody disappeared except the catcher and me. I just threw the ball. I felt totally comfortable and at-home. Given the chance, I think I could have pitched nine innings. A wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Oakland A's - spring training - 2014
Where 2014 all began -- Oakland A's spring training.

Pete Elman

Aftermath of a tragedy:

The test begins

--Pete Elam

These are the times that try men's souls. It is said that in sports we find greater character in defeat than in triumph. We can all celebrate a winner; it's easy. But the way that a team -- or a city -- handles a crushing loss is the true test.

As hard as it is for us fans, how can one possibly fathom the pain that the Athletics must be experiencing at this moment? To go in seven short weeks from the penthouse to the other house must be unbearably excruciating for Beane, Melvin, Young and all the players. They were at 72-44 when the roof fell in, when the bottom fell out and the team began to take on water. What had been their calling card -- winning the close ones -- became their Achilles' heel.

I don't know what moves Billy will make, and have no idea what the roster will look like come April. But I do know that now is NOT the time to throw in the towel and jump ship. Would you rather be in Philadelphia? How about Cleveland? As important as it is that the A's look forward and try to regroup after yet another heartbreaking end to the season, it is imperative that they have our support.

What happened in August and September was Shakespearean, but there were reasons. You cannot hit, catch, throw a baseball or run the bases when you're beat up. Eventually your handpicked all-star rock band of starters will wither under the strain of no run support. And when the train starts rolling, it won't slow down until it runs off the rails, which is exactly what happened.

So how do you get off the mat? You find strength in the things that got you here: your competitive drive, your will and unfailing belief in your own abilities. The world did not end when Salvatore Perez hit that ball past a sprawling Josh Donaldson, a sight that will cause me nightmares for years.

It took me forever to fall asleep Tuesday night, and when I finally did, I had the kind of dream you have when you are exhausted and emotionally spent. In my dream it was a beautiful day, the sky was blue, and I was outdoors shooting hoops ... with Jonny Gomes. He looked at me and with that eternally positive attitude of his, smiled and said, "You just gotta believe."

If Jonny says it, it's so.
