New Parking Lot Infiltration System Manages Stormwater Runoff
The new West Caracas Avenue Parking Lot, located beside the Hershey Volunteer Fire Station, was designed using Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) to reduce stormwater runoff and lessen the negative impact on our local waterways. The Board of Supervisors and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) held an event on Tuesday, December 5, 2017, to demonstrate how the system works and to promote the use of BMPs.
Water was poured on the parking lot to show how the porous asphalt absorbs water. In addition, the vegetative islands and landscaping help rain water to infiltrate into the ground. The project was funded in part through a $200,000 PA DEP Local Stormwater BMP Implementation grant.
Informational signage has been posted to educate the public on the BMP features and the benefits of their use to improve water quality. Residents are encouraged to check it out on a rainy day and to consider how the use of Best Management Practices can reduce stormwater runoff from their properties.

Derry Township Environmental Advisory Council Receives 2018 TreeVitalize Grant
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry awarded the Derry Township Environmental Advisory Council a $6,375 grant for community tree plantings. Over 350,000 shade trees have been planted through the program since it was launched on Arbor Day 2004.
Applications were submitted by Derry Township homeowners over the summer to reserve their "almost free tree" for a total of 25 trees to be planted in the spring next year.

In the Middle Meets for a Holiday Craft
Students in grades 6th and up are invited to the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, on Wednesday, December 13 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 to make a festive garland with artist Suze Moll. The craft will be made with book pages and colored pencils.

Hershey High School Band Holds All You can Eat Pancake Breakfast with Santa!
Support your local high school band and come to Santa's Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, December 9 from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Hershey Elementary School Cafeteria, 450 Homestead Road.
There will be musical performance by the District's Music Department, grades 4 through 12, story time, crafts, and a bake sale. Santa will visit from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Bring your camera for photos.
Tickets are $6 pre-sale for ages 11 and up and $4 for ages 3 to 10. Ages two and under are free.

“An American Christmas” Concert at Derry Church
Showcases Choirs, Bells, Orchestra and Guest Soloists
“An American Christmas” holiday concert extravaganza will be presented in two performances Saturday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 10 at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 East Derry Road, Hershey.
The 75-voice concert will begin with a set of lively carols from Colonial America, such as were likely sung at Derry Church in the late 18
th
century. Beautiful folk carols from the mountains of Southern Appalachia with hammered dulcimer accompaniment will also be featured. The audience will be invited to join the choirs and orchestra to help raise the rafters on two American favorites.
The second half of the program continues with two exquisite spirituals featuring Jennifer Groves, soprano soloist from New York. A number of modern classics follow including arrangements of
The Little Drummer Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear
, and
Some Children See Him

The Derry Ringers handbell choir will perform concert arrangements of
I Wonder as I Wander

Go, Tell It on the Mountain
. Guest soloists, baritones Sean Jernigan and Constantine Tsourakis from New York and tenor George Somerville from Philadelphia, will combine to form a trio of wise men singing the evocative shape-note carol,

North Pole Hotline To Raise Funds for the Hungry
Gemma’s Angels
, a Hershey non-profit organization dedicated to reducing hunger, is announcing the operation of the North Pole Hotline sponsored by Stoudt’s Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning of Hershey.

“The Elves” will ask for information that only Santa knows (teacher's name, pets, siblings, what children want from Santa, etc.). Volunteers, acting as Santa “helpers,” place the calls to the children at their homes from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 22 and Saturday, December 23. Calls are free. A voluntary donation of $10.00 per child or $20.00 per family is encouraged.
Gemma’s Angels is the only area program in which 100% of the proceeds benefit the hungry.

Hershey Figure Skating Club Invites You to Learn to Skate with Santa's Elves and Visit With Santa!
Santa and his elves are taking a quick break from their Christmas toy making to visit and ice skate with us! Have fun skating with the elves and then visit with Santa and tell him your last minute wish list over warm chocolate chip cookies and hot cocoa.

The Hershey Derry Township Historical Society will hold a Holiday Open House on Thursday, December 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Historical Society's Museum, 40 Northeast Drive, Hershey.

Gemma’s Angels Collects Toys for 22 Years
Gemma’s Angels of Hershey is seeking new toys and monetary donations to buy toys for children living in homeless shelters in Harrisburg.
Gemma's Angels will hold Christmas parties at Shalom House, Evergreen House, and Lourdes House. New this year, The Santa Bus, will be located at Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families, for parents to shop from the donated toys at no cost.
Gemma’s Angels is celebrating its 22nd year of collecting toys and conducting parties, with their first party occurring in 1995 at the Interfaith Shelter.
