Alamo Colleges District - Northeast Lakeview College Accredited, Three Colleges' Accreditation Reaffirmed

Northeast Lakeview College has been accredited and three
of the other Alamo Colleges District colleges have been reaffirmed for accreditation. |
The colleges of the Alamo Colleges District are pleased to announce the reaffirmation of the accreditation of Northwest Vista College, St. Philip's College and San Antonio College. The colleges received notification of their reaffirmation at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) recent annual meeting. The colleges, in collaboration with the district, implemented changes to their policies and procedures after they were placed on Warning status by SACSCOC for 12 months in December 2016, while continuing to be accredited.
The district's newest college, Northeast Lakeview College, was approved for accreditation by SACSCOC at the annual meeting. Palo Alto College was not affected by the SACSCOC actions and also continues to be accredited.
"The Board is extremely proud of the outstanding level of collaboration and the dedication and hard work on the part of the administration, faculty and staff at Northwest Vista, St. Philip's and San Antonio Colleges, which has resulted in this wonderful news," said Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Yvonne Katz. "On behalf of the Board, I congratulate Northwest Vista President Dr. Ric Baser, St. Philip's President Dr. Adena Williams Loston and SAC President Dr. Robert Vela on their colleges' reaffirmation of accreditation," she added.
"We are pleased that these three colleges, working together with the district administration and the Board of Trustees, have satisfied the recommendations of SACSCOC and now have their accreditation reaffirmed," said Alamo Colleges Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie. "We also want to congratulate Dr. Tom Cleary, who did an outstanding job as interim president of NLC, and Dr. Veronica Garcia and the administration, faculty and staff at Northeast Lakeview College on the excellent work they have done that has resulted in their receiving accreditation," he added.
Since the three colleges on Warning status remained accredited, the action by SACSCOC did not adversely affect their enrollment, the ability to award financial aid to their students, the transfer of students' credits to universities or students' ability to graduate.

Alamo Colleges District - Northwest Vista College (NVC) is among an elite group of community colleges competing for a prestigious national award-the Bellwether award. Only 10 community colleges in the nation have been chosen as finalists for the 2018 award in the Instructional Program & Services category.
The Bellwether award annually recognizes outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are successfully leading community colleges into the future.
As a finalist, NVC will present its program, "Dismantling the Great Math Barrier: A College-Wide Approach," at a national conference on January 29.
NVC, the third largest college/university in San Antonio, has been working to improve graduation rates of its students and realized many students never complete a degree at NVC due to reasons associated with a college level math requirement. Key NVC math faculty created a college-wide approach to provide students early faculty and student success advisement to help them discover the best math pathway for success in completing their degree, enhancing their transfer to a university and/or transitioning to employment. The Project Math Pathways advisement process includes math faculty in new student orientations and in the admissions center and education of employees on how to advise students on identifying the best math pathway to support their goals.
Two years ago, NVC also received a federal grant that ultimately launched Project Math Paths. NVC math faculty designed five different math pathways because they realized not everyone needs college-level algebra designed for science and math students. Many four-year institutions are accepting college-level liberal arts math, statistics, and algebra (without the STEM focus).

Alamo Colleges District - St. Philip's College Program Chosen as Finalist for Star Award
The Alamo Colleges District - St. Philip's College (SPC) automotive technology program is a finalist for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's (THECB) 2017 Star award. While one finalist is recognized, the best practices of all finalists are shared in the permanent record that corporate business leaders use as a resource on how education is contributing to achieving goals in Texas' long-range strategic plan to remain globally competitive.
The other Star award finalists are Austin Community College District (Accelerated Programmer Training), Coastal Bend College (Pathways to Success for Students in Allied Health), Odessa College (Eight-Week Terms: A Pathway to 60x30TX), The University of Texas at Dallas (Undergraduate Success Scholars), The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (15 to GRAD: Tuition Plan, Advising, & Outreach to Support 15 Hour Enrollment), University of Houston (UH in 4) and University of Houston-Downtown (The Gateway Course Innovation Initiative). In choosing SPC as a finalist, initial review panelists have referred the innovative work of the SPC automotive technology program and colleague programs to a nine-member external review and selection committee, while the THECB is sharing facts on what makes the college's automotive technology program so successful.
