TMA NextGen has just wrapped up a fantastic 2016 with our annual NextGen Leadership Meeting held at the offices of Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago, October 13-15. Many thanks to the 2016 TMA NextGen Global Chair, Kat Parker, for all of her hard work this past year and a job well done!

This was our first year holding the leadership meeting in Chicago. The Windy City was so much fun that we are doing it again! Please save the date for the 2017 TMA NextGen Leadership Meeting, which will be held on December 7-9 in Chicago. The leadership meeting planning committee, led by Kelley McLaren, Alex Boerema, and Chris Broussard, is already hard at work planning another terrific meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact them with any questions. Each chapter is invited to send NextGen members, and we'd love to see you there. The Membership Committee, headed by Evan Miller and Ethan Birnberg will soon be reaching out to each chapter about the leadership meeting and other exciting NextGen news - stay tuned!

The Distressed Investing Conference in Las Vegas is quickly approaching! Please join your fellow NextGen-ers on February 2 at 6:00 p.m. for a drink in the Sky Lounge and for 360 degree views in a VIP cabin on High Roller, the world's tallest observation wheel. A separate registration will be required. An email will go out as soon as registration is open.  

The Conferences Committee and the Community Service Committee have already started planning NextGen events for The 2017 TMA Annual and are looking to expand NextGen programming to the regional conferences. If you have any ideas, please reach out to the Conferences Committee Chair, Nick McDearis or co-chair, Zach Hyman or the Community Services Committee chair, Jim Trankina or co-chair, Ryan Farley. We'd love to have your thoughts and suggestions.

At the chapter level, please make sure to let us know about your NextGen events or about any NextGen member accomplishments so we can be sure to highlight them in NextGen NextNews. Please e-mail Saby Bose or Michael Hill with your news.

It is not too late to get involved in NextGen at the global level, even if you have never volunteered at the global level before. We are very interested in getting as many people - especially newcomers - as involved as possible. It is a great way to meet and network with other young professionals, and there are so many ways to get involved. If you have any interest in volunteering, please contact myself, Craig Lutterbein (the 2017 Co-Chair) or Maura Sage. We are looking forward to a great 2017.

2017 TMA Global NextGen Chair

NextGen convened its fifth annual leadership conference October 13-15 at the offices of Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago. The conference opened with a reception at the loft offices of Ravinia Capital, followed by small group dinners at popular local restaurants.

The next day, following a breakfast panel hosted by the TMA Chicago/Midwest Chapter at the Standard Club featuring former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, over 70 attendees from the U.S., Canada, and Australia gathered at Kirkland for a bankruptcy judges' panel, a lunch discussion on the global economic outlook, afternoon panels on business development best practices and the current lending landscape, and a "View from the Top" featuring tips from senior industry leaders. Friday's activities concluded with a reception at Pinstripes, where NextGen members' wide range of bowling and bocce skills were on display.

Saturday morning kicked off at the Kirkland & Ellis offices with a networking breakfast and the 2016 NextGen chair presentation. Best practice breakout sessions followed where attendees were split into small groups to discuss individual chapter operations, including sharing ideas to have a robust NextGen chapter. These ideas were later discussed among the whole group. Lunch was served and a leadership panel consisting of industry leaders took the stage educating attendees how to best navigate professional and personal development.

Tony Bowker of Maud Street Partners was the keynote speaker on Saturday. He spoke about his fascinating journey into creating one of the most successful craft breweries in the world and the triumphs and challenges that he faced along the way. It was of course accompanied by some beer tasting! The conference ended with an optional happy hour event at Happy Camper.

This year's conference also featured a NextGen community service project for the second year in a row. Volunteers gathered at SitStayRead, a Chicago non-profit devoted to improving literacy skills and fostering a love of learning in children in low-income neighborhoods. Time was spent creating encouragement cards that will eventually be given to students as a reward for their reading efforts. A great time was had by all who attended!

The 2016 TMA Annual was a great way to collaborate face-to-face with national counterparts and discover new opportunities for growing our respective businesses while strengthening the overall turnaround industry. "Discover" being the operative word as over 500 professionals from several continents descended upon magical Disney World in sunny Orlando, Florida. Over a three-day span of meetings, panels and sessions, many professional and personal connections both began and were revitalized.

The week kicked off with the TMA Florida Chapter hosting a Fireworks, Cocktails, and Dessert Reception the night before the conference commenced. TMA NextGen and general members experienced Disney's phenomenal firework show while taking in the Epcot Food & Wine fest as well.

During the conference, TMA NextGen hosted a Networking Reception on Thursday night sponsored by Alvarez and Marsal. Although half the attendees were still experiencing the residual effects of the Cubs first World Series title in over a century, it was a great event.

From a NextGen perspective, members found it advantageous to be in the arena where deals were being talked about, from both the sole proprietors and the global firms. The network of experienced advisors is extensive in the larger TMA chapters, but for those members that might feel geographically isolated, this conference was an essential opportunity to not only meet other experienced professionals but begin to build their own relationships with peers. It will be tough to top this years conference next year in Dallas, but we know the conference panel will succeed in doing so.
