2017 Rule Changes for SCCA RoadRally
The annual rule change process for the SCCA Road Rally program starts in the first half of the calendar year. All proposed rules changes are surfaced to the Road Rally Board by June 30. The RRB then takes an initial pass at the proposed changes and those proposals which have to the potential to be approved by the RRB are released for public comment. The comment period for comments from the road rally community closed October 8 and the RRB took their final action at the October 10 meeting. Rules changes that passed at this meeting are forwarded to the SCCA Board of Directors for their review and approval at their early December meeting. The Road Rally Rulebook is then updated and made available for the 2017 competition season begin in January.
This year the RRB made a concerted effort to execute a rules change process that was objective, methodical, thoughtful, inclusive and transparent. Toward that end we actively solicited comments from many members of the broader road rally community and formally tabulated those results and comments.
This year 22 people from the rally community shared their opinions with us on these proposals. This was very helpful to the RRB in deciding on each item. I have included information on how the rally community voted on each proposal. Not everyone offered an opinion on every proposal, so you’ll note that many of the votes do not total 22.
At the October 10th RRB meeting, the RRB voted to pass 5 of the 14 proposals as originally stated. Two proposals were passed with a slight modification. One proposal was tabled for further investigation. The remaining 6 proposals were rejected.
To read the RRB rulings please click here!
These recommendations will now go the SCCA Board of Directors for their final decision, so I caution everyone against assuming that these are a done deal. They are not final until the Board of Directions acts on each proposal in December. I anticipate approval of the RRB recommendations by the full BOD. I would again like to thank the people who sent an email to share their opinions with us on these matters. Your opinions allowed the Rally Board to quickly discuss and approve or dismiss those proposals where there was a strong indication of support or disapproval and allowed us to spend the majority of our time discussing those proposals and to determine whether the effect of the change would best meet our goals for the rally program.
As always I look forward to your comments on this or any other item of interest or concern regarding the SCCA road rally program.

USRRC is 0 Days Away!
Cheryl Lynn with RReNews here! I will be heading to the USRRC 2016, and I am sad that I shall not find Ted Goddard there to greet me, yet shall look for his ghost around the covered bridges as we pass, or maybe he will point my car in the right direction along the route!
Come join New England Region of SCCA as it celebrates 50 years of Ted Goddard and Covered Bridges. Covered Bridge 50 Road Rally and A Bridge Too Far, will be headquartered at Mount Snow Resort, West Dover, VT on the weekend of November 4-6, 2016.
And to John Buffum, Rallymaster of Sunday's event — we forgot to pack our Red Lantern Trophy! You will have one awaiting us, won't you?
We shall hope to have coverage in the December RReNews from the organizers and some of the teams too! Maybe a few photos too?

Snow has fallen, winter is here!
I have been faithlful to RReNews, and I ask your pardon this month as I don't have a column directly from me this month. Yes! It has been almost four years that we have been providing RReNews.
You have all read my request
s each month to be a contributor and I am including it again this month. Please, take it to heed.
I have had unexpected travels in September, and two trips in October, and am willingly heading to New England for the USRRC November 4-6th.
I have three questions on USRRC 2017 that come to mind that are needing answers:
- Jerry White on free tickets
- Bruce Gezon on all-wheel-drive needed
- Philip Royale on details! details! details!
The USRRC17 Commmittee met last week, and we want to thank those of planning to trek north (and locally in Alaska) who have written to be added to our USRRC17eNews@comeroadrallywith.us
eNews list! We appreciate that you are considering, planning and supporting the effort being made for the event!
In the meantime, thank you for being a part of my Road Rally Family! Safe travels, Cheryl Lynn

Planning the Course – Second in a Series - Using Google Maps
|
|
Google maps is a powerful too for the Rallymaster, that allows you to layout a tentative route without leaving your house. It helps if you are generally familiar with the roads in the area, but it is not absolutely necessary.
Assume you already know your start and finish locations. Launch google maps (maps.google.com) on your browser and find the start location.
Click on the graphic to the left to download a pdf-file that walks you through "just a glimpse" of how googlemaps can help you as a Rallymaster!
I’ve only brushed on the surface here, but as you learn to use maps, you will find it is a valuable tool. Again, the key is to use it as a tool. It will not eliminate running the course or writing detailed route instructions, but it will give a good start and prevent spending a lot of driving time examining roads that go nowhere, or even possibly painting yourself into a corner.

Kansas Rally Weekend - Nov 12-13th, 2016
The
East to Weston Rally
is a TSD (time-speed-distance) Touring Rally
sanctioned by the Kansas City Region of the SCCA. This event will run over the
paved roads of northeastern Kansas, starting in Lawrence, Kansas and ending in
Weston, Missouri.
The
Pavement Ends Rally
is also a TSD Touring rally that will use paved and
good quality unpaved roads. This event will start and end near Lawrence,
Kansas.
These events are a test of precision driving and teamwork between driver and
navigator. Straightforward, non-devious route instructions with specified average
speeds will test the rallyists’ ability to arrive at unknown checkpoint locations on
time, neither early nor late.
Entries strictly limited to 20 cars. Pre-Registration is strongly
recommended. Reserve your place now by sending an email to:
rbireta@gmail.com, 785-691-7437. See the flyer Kansas Rally Weekend Flyer.

SCCA Road Rally Planning Calendar
All SCCA Regions are encouraged to Sanction their events through the National Office as soon as the date is known – it will get it out on the planning calendar, a listing in SportsCar and let fellow Rallymasters know that date is already taken. And, perhaps most important, it helps Rallyists plan their travels to your Rally!
Jeanne English
maintains this calendar, with input from
Deena Rowland of the National Office as sanctions come in from Organizers. Seek out the latest calendar off the www.scca.com website via the About SCCA and the Downloads tab!
