Our Mission: To care for anyone experiencing the impact
of a life-threatening illness or grieving the death of a loved one.

A Letter from David
With the end of 2016 fast approaching, the holiday imagery is inescapable. For many of us, the pumpkin pies and holiday lights are signs of the festive months ahead. But for others, the holidays can be a time of year when our memories of loved ones who have died make us feel vulnerable, reminiscent and even alone.

While these powerful feelings of sorrow can clash with the jovial imagery surrounding us, it's important not to isolate ourselves or hide these feelings. Instead, this could be a time to develop all new traditions, such as volunteering or making a donation in the name of a loved one. And don't be afraid to reach out. We'd love to hear from anyone in need of that extra support this year, and we hope to see you at our annual Light Up a Life Tree lightings Dec. 3 in Santa Barbara, Dec. 4 in Goleta and Dec. 10 in Carpinteria.

Be well,
David Selberg, CEO

Art Exhibition Brings Art of late John Schlesinger
to Hospice of Santa Barbara

It's our pleasure to have the work of late artist John Schlesinger on display for a solo art exhibition in our Leigh Block Gallery within Hospice of Santa Barbara -- 2050 Alameda Padre Serra, Suite #100, Santa Barbara -- through Jan 24, 2017.

Growing up suffering from a severe and debilitating case of Crohn's Disease, John turned to painting at a young age. Knowing that the condition would lead to a life filled with challenges, John's artwork at times took on somber meanings, depending upon his health at the time. John created a diverse library of artwork, using mixed media, including paint, collage and assemblage. He continued producing his artwork through countless surgeries.
His sister Mary Schlesinger describes the exhibition at Hospice of Santa Barbara as a "trove of riches" that will showcase a small slice of her brother's work, which has alternately been described as ethereal and mysterious, and hauntingly beautiful. This will be the first time many of the pieces have been on display.

Mary will donate 25% of the proceeds from the art sales to Hospice of Santa Barbara, Inc., a volunteer hospice organization.

Before I Die Wall - Exhibit at SB Art Museum

The community's response to the Before I Die Wall, which we brought to the community along with the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, has been incredible.

The wall brought a unique, collective expression of living our mortality out loud and communal proof that we are not alone as we try to make sense of our lives and our deaths. The global art project was available outside of the museum's Family Resource Center Oct.15-23.

Since artist Candy Chang painted the first Before I Die wall on the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans, over 1,000 Before I Die walls have been created in over 35 languages and over 70 countries, including Kazakhstan, Iraq, Haiti, China, Ukraine, Portugal, Japan, Denmark, Argentina, and South Africa.
