Grade 5 Collaborates with LEAP

As part of Energy Action Month in October, the Local Energy alliance Program (LEAP) and our 5th Graders at Peabody School worked to discover the vampires that are hiding in our homes, schools, and businesses. Vampires are electronic devices and appliances that draw electricity when they are not in use.

We discovered vampires with electronic devices and appliances that have clocks, that are capable of running in standby mode, and/or need a remote to turn it on. The vampires we found included microwaves with clocks, coffee makers with clocks, computers, and smart TVs. We found that  some but not all chargers are vampires . The chargers that were vampires included the chargers for an electric toothbrush and computer speakers.

See more information about our work at the LEAP website!
Bring a Friend Day

We are excited to welcome our Bring a Friend Day visitors on Tuesday, 11/7, and we appreciate your awareness that we will have more cars parking that morning to walk children in to school. Also, while the deadline for this BAF day has passed, please note that the next opportunity to bring guests will be January 22. Thank you!
Parent-Teacher Conference Babysitting

8th graders will be offering babysitting services during Parent-Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November 9th and Friday, November 10th.

Babysitting will be available each day between 8am-4pm. Babysitting is to be used during a parent's conference time only. Parents should drop their children in the Peabody gym and sign them in. There will be board games, coloring, and gym activities.

Donations will be accepted to support the 8th grade legacy project. Each year the 8th grade class raises funds for a legacy gift: in the past this has included the outdoor classroom, the Peabody bus, a ping pong table, and furniture for the atrium.

Thanks for supporting our 8th graders!

This week in Middle School...

  • Our Grade 8 students participated in a trip to the Triple C Camp Ropes Course.

  • Our Grade 7 students tested their popsicle stick bridge designs. The design criteria for building these bridges were a minimum of a 2 ft. span and 10in. clearance. Popsicles were valued at $1,500 and glue sticks were valued at $20,000 ($60,000 each glue stick after the first 10 to keep the focus on the popsicles). Students designed bridges to hold the most weight and cheapest cost per pound. Claire Newman's bridge held 35 pounds and was the most cost efficient at $24,778.57 per pound!

  • Quarter Two started on 11/2. Report cards will be distributed next week.

Driving Reminder

We are seeing a number of morning incidents where a local school bus is stopped on Southern Parkway at the Stoney Ridge intersection and parents are not stopping their vehicles to give right of way.

Please remember that it is a Virginia state law that when a school bus is stopped in the road with lights flashing and the stop sign out, and there is no divider between the lanes, that you MUST stop your vehicle.

We appreciate everyone paying attention to their driving so that all our children stay safe. Thank you!
