Our Mission: To care for anyone experiencing the impact
of a life-threatening illness or grieving the death of a loved one.

A Letter from David
Looking back, 2016 has been both an amazing and at times difficult year. It has been a pleasure watching Hospice of Santa Barbara continue to grow and our dedicated staff rise to the occasion as community members in search of help walk through our doors. Throughout the year I have been inspired by the courage and determination of our clients, who are often times reeling from tragic losses or in the midst of serious illnesses.

My biggest takeaway has been the strides that staff, volunteers and clients are able to make when they come together to form relationships that I believe are unique and central to Hospice of Santa Barbara. This year for me underscored the importance in providing a space where healing is the priority, and payments, bills and insurance information aren't even part of the equation. As always, we thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to the lessons that are sure to come in 2017 as we continue to be there for those who reach out in need.

Hospice of Santa Barbara Offers Support to
Those Grieving During Holidays
Community members hang stars in remembrance of loved ones during Light Up A Life.
It was a pleasure to see the community join together over the weekend to honor the loved ones they miss this holiday season during our 33rd annual Light Up A Life (LUAL) tree lighting ceremonies in Santa Barbara and Goleta
Hundreds participated in the community gatherings at Casa de la Guerra in Santa Barbara and Camino Real Marketplace in Goleta on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The free ceremonies feature special guests, entertainment, and the lighting of a Memorial tree at each location with hundreds of sparkling lights and stars, each symbolizing a tribute to a loved one. Stars are available online and are also available at the ceremonies for a suggested donation of $15 for those wishing to personalize a star and hang it on the tree. All proceeds benefit Hospice of Santa Barbara.

The remaining 2016 LUAL ceremony will be held Saturday, Dec. 10th, 5:30 p.m. at the Seal Fountain in Linden Plaza, Linden Avenue, Carpinteria.

Program Spotlight: Children & Family Services

- Serious illness, death and grief are a natural part of life, and getting through it with Hospice of Santa Barbara can help us hold onto cherished memories and reflect positively on the grieving process. In our community, one in five children will experience the death of someone close to them.  By the age of 18, one in 20 will lose one or both parents. Hospice of Santa Barbara's (HSB) Children & Family Services proudly provides children's counseling, programs and outreach designed to provide compassionate care and bereavement services through these difficult time - all at no cost to clients.  Read more.

Before I Die Wall at First Thursday

Passersby shared some of their greatest life goals at our Before I Die wall, which we set up in front of Marshalls on State Street during First Thursday on Nov. 3

The wall brought a unique, collective expression of living our mortality out loud and communal proof that we are not alone as we try to make sense of our lives and our deaths. This marks Hospice of Santa Barbara's second Before I Die wall within the community. The first was set up inside the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in October.

Since artist Candy Chang painted the first Before I Die wall on the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans, over 1,000 Before I Die walls have been created in over 35 languages and over 70 countries, including Kazakhstan, Iraq, Haiti, China, Ukraine, Portugal, Japan, Denmark, Argentina, and South Africa.

HSB will present the Before I Die wall around Santa Barbara in 2017.
