 Ice Fishing Safety Tips

Winter is here and it is time to enjoy the great outdoors and take advantage  of one of Brock Townships' greatest destinations - Lake Simcoe.

There are many Ice Fishing Operators in the Township, and many residents who venture out on their own to partake in some ice fishing. No matter who you are travelling with it is imperative to be aware of your surroundings and keep in mind some safety tips.

  • Fish with a friend and let others know where you are going.
  • Wear a floatation device and cold protection suit, even if you are fishing from shore or in a fish hut.
  • Carry rescue equipment - ice picks, rope, cell phone, first aid kit, waterproof matches, survival blanket and flash light.
  • Save the alcohol for when you get home.
  • Always be aware of the thickness and quality of ice to reduce risk of breaking through. Local Operators are aware of when it is safe to be out fishing, if heading out on your own use the location of the operators as a guide.
For more ice fishing safety tips visit the Canadian Red Cross website.
