PCUSA Stated Clerk Challenges Us to 'Live Like Jesus'

"Now What" Event Draws Crowd to
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service
"The challenge of the Church is to get in trouble . . . any church that is not in trouble is not doing the work of Jesus," The Rev. Dr. Herbert J. Nelson II, Stated Clerk for the Presbyterian Church USA, told listeners gathered in observance of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Faith Presbyterian Church in Northeast Baltimore.
Nearly 150 people turned out yesterday to participate in "Now What?," an event organized by the Presbytery of Baltimore's Apostles & Disciples group with support from the Commission on Reconciliation. The day was spent in worship celebrating the legacy of the slain civil rights leader, as well as, reflecting on where we [the Church] go from here - chaos or community - given the current social and economic discord in our nation.
Rev. Nelson encouraged those gathered to live their lives like Jesus, Rev. King, Gandhi and others who helped forge social, political and economic change. In times of turmoil, these prophetic leaders challenged the powers and principalities of an unjust society at the risk of losing their own lives. "If the Church is to be called to a prophetic resurrection in this period then we are going to have to live that same kind of life and be willing to take risk for more than just ourselves," urged Rev. Nelson.
"And, if that's not the life we're living then we're not living like Jesus," he added.
After the keynote address, participants broke into groups to discuss issues of racism, community activism and changes to address injustices within our own churches. The small group settings offered a safe space for all to share stories of brokenness, hurt, fear, hope and healing. The group discussions also provided some with the rare opportunity to become more aware of their own prejudices or "unconscious biases" of people different from themselves.
At the close of the event, participants encircled the church sanctuary, hand in hand, and sang of the Holy Spirit, hope and peace in days to come.
