Luther College President Paula J. Carlson 
has announced the appointment of Aimee Viniard-Weideman as vice president for communications and marketing. She will begin her new duties September 5. "Ms. Viniard-Weideman has a passion for Luther's values and mission, and she has experience and expertise to lead innovation and strategic change in order to share the Luther story in new, creative, and compelling ways," said President Carlson. 
 
Interested in seeing the humanity  in those with whom we are at odds, Meline Toumani, author of "There Was and There Was Not," will give the Luther College Opening Convocation address Thursday, August 31. Convocation begins at 9:40 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall.
 
SAC Entertainment presents hypnotist Dr. Jim Wand  in the Center for Faith and Life on Saturday, September 2 at 7:30 p.m. His performance is custom designed for the audience in attendance, is always tastefully done, and is entertaining for all ages. Sell your Books for $$$  --- Do you have textbooks or books you want to sell for cash? No need to have purchased the books from the Book Shop. A book buyer will be in the lobby of Dahl  Centennial Union from 9:30 a.m. -3:30 p.m. August 31-September 1.

Luther Class Ring Time  --- Do not miss the first opportunity of the year to order your Luther class ring. A representative from Jostens will in the lobby of Dahl Union from 9:30am-3:30pm August 30-September 1 offering a discount on all order class rings.
 
Seniors:  Individual study carrels are again available for reservation on a first-come, first served basis in Preus Library. The carrels are located along the perimeter of the third floor and are assigned for personal use on a per-semester basis. Contact Eddy Atwell to request a senior carrel reservation for the fall. There are a limited number dedicated for this use.
 
Beyond the Barbed Wire  -- Documentary on Japanese internment during WWII. Learn about the unique experiences of Japanese Americans who came to Minnesota after being forced into internment camps following Pearl Harbor. St. Olaf students and faculty who produced the film will be present. Q & A following. Sunday, September 3, 7:00-8:00 p.m., Valders 262.  Sponsored by the Center for Ethics and Public Engagement (CEPE).

Nobel Peace Prize Forum , September 15-16 at Augsburg College -- Act now to reserve your place at the Forum, "Dialogue in Divided Societies," honoring 2015 Nobel Peace Prize recipients, the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet. "Rare Forms,"  an exhibit created by artist Amy Goldman on display at Luther, features 17 bronze cast sculptures of heirloom plant varieties made using the lost wax casting process. Each individual sculpture is a replica of a plant grown in her own garden. Her artwork is made to celebrate the vast array of diversity found in plants not only in her personal garden, but around the world. The display, on display through October, is located outside the Wigley-Fleming Gallery in the CFA. 
 
The Web Content Bureau  is seeking a student worker. Working with Web Content is a fantastic opportunity to build a competitive resume in a fun, flexible, and creative environment. Applicants must have excellent communication skills, the ability to work independently, and be comfortable working with a variety of people. Featuring paintings and 3-D objects  created by Luther College Alumnus Robby Scott, the exhibit "Just Passing Through" will be on display September 1-October 8 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

Dead Horses

Come watch  Dead Horses  perform this Friday, September 1 in Bentdahl Commons (rain location: Marty's) at 
6 p.m. Tickets are FREE with CAF and $9 without. Available  online  or at the Ticket Office. Milwaukee-based folk band Dead Horses have cultivated a soulful roots sensibility well beyond their years. From ballrooms to festivals Dead Horses have performed with Trampled by Turtles, Mandolin Orange, and Elephant Revival.
