The Siena Scribe

January 17, 2017
In this issue of the Scirbe:
Dear Parents,

At some point during high school, I had set my heart on becoming a police officer.  (Yes, I am being perfectly honest.)  After arriving at this decision, I began to investigate the requirements for this career choice.  I searched for the appropriate college programs, started to work on improving various areas of physical fitness - endurance, muscular strength, etc.  For months, I worked hard and had great hopes and expectations that, if I were determined and diligent enough, I would reach my goal.  It was a sad day when I finally had to admit that I really did not have what it takes to become a police officer: one of the requirements was that a candidate be able to bench-press at least 100 lbs. - since I weighed just about that, the likelihood of meeting this requirement was beyond slim.

I share this story with you because this is the time of the year when anxiety and fatigue tend to reach a climax.  Our students have worked hard and they have expectations of achieving certain results.  Second quarter report cards go home today: the grades will be lower than anticipated for many students because, unlike the first quarter during which previously-learned concepts were reviewed and reinforced, concepts and skills taught during the second quarter are mainly new.  The amount of effort which earned great results for the first quarter may not yield the same level of success for the second quarter - this reality often leads to disappointment.  At such times it is important to remember that hard work is never wasted because it always leads to learning.  My 'failed' attempt to become a police officer benefited me in many ways even though I did not reach my goal.

The sight of a disappointed and struggling child can be very distressing for parents and teachers.  Our response to our children's struggles is immensely important: very often, children take their emotional cue from trusted adults.  We must acknowledge their feelings of disappointment with compassion, but not give in to them.  We must support, but not enable - it takes wisdom to distinguish between these two approaches.  We must continue to help our students to remain positive - to focus on the learning that has taken place, to celebrate the gains that have been made, and to maintain and, if appropriate, to grow their efforts for the third and fourth quarters.
Our goal is to encourage and lead all students to achieve their personal best, which is all that God asks of each of us.

God bless,
Sister Mary Jacinta, O.P.
Principal

fooddrive8th Grade Catholic School Food Drive

Please support the efforts of our 8th grade students, Macie Sacristan and Gracen Bohling, to serve those who suffer from hunger within our local community: "Are you aware that 14.5% of families in America experience food shortage? Last year, when the middle school students wrote on the topic of hunger in America, we learned that this is a widespread problem that is affecting families all over our country. The 8th graders have come up with a food plan, and we hope that our whole school will help! We believe that, instead of sitting back and watching or writing about hunger, we should actually do something about it. In order to make a difference and raise awareness about this issue, we are going to conduct a food drive and we would like the whole SCS community to participate. Starting on January 17, we will begin to collect canned food donations. Our goal is to collect 500 cans of food by January 31.  If we meet our goal, we will celebrate with an out-of-uniform day."

Join us at our Movie Night will be on Friday, January 20 at 6:00 p.m.!  Admission is free.
