Our Mission: To care for anyone experiencing the impact
of a serious illness or grieving the death of a loved one.

A Letter from David
Happy 2017! I hope you all had an amazing holiday season and are coming into the New Year refreshed. The year may just be beginning, but I'm already excited about what the next 12 months have in store. Our staff has been hard at work and is introducing some exciting new programs, as well as welcoming back some older programs we haven't seen in a while.

With the clock on the year just starting, it's a pleasure to see our staff already using new services to reach out to new populations in need. It's our goal to keep this momentum going throughout the year, and as always, we thank you for the ongoing support that is allowing us to drive the mission of Hospice of Santa Barbara further than ever.

HSB welcomes back Learn at Lunch!
We're proud to reintroduce the "HSB Learn at Lunch" program for 2017! Join us for this informal series of community educational events for staff, volunteers, board members and friends to deepen our knowledge of issues related to our work. It's the perfect chance to give us practical ideas we can apply and get to know each other. Attendees are welcome to bring lunches.  These special luncheons will occur on the third Fridays of the month. No RSVP necessary. Please come whenever and as often as you like.

January 20th from 12pm-1pm
"Ask a mortician: Dispelling myths and misconceptions about mortuary care"
With Jennifer Parks - General Manager / Funeral Arrangement Counselor / Celebrant for McDermott-Crockett Mortuary and an Independent's 2016 Local Hero will be here to take all our questions about funerals, as well as discuss ritual participation in the preparation of one's loved one, and ways to "Share Life."

February 17th from 12pm-1pm
"Becoming flow-throughs: how to be with our pain"?
With Dr. Michael Kearney - Director of Cottage Palliative Medicine and medical director of Serenity House

We tend to think of "self-care" in practical terms as having good professional boundaries and times of rest and renewal outside the workplace. In this talk Michael will present two other models of self-care -- psychological and spiritual -- that draw on a different set of assumptions and practices.

'I Have a Friend' Training coming in May

Hospice of Santa Barbara is seeking volunteers to make a difference in a child's life by joining the "I Have A Friend ®" Mentor Program. Mentor volunteers are adults who experienced the death of a parent or sibling as a child and are trained and matched with children who have recently experienced a similar loss. Mentors help a child to heal, thrive and feel "normal" again.  Training takes place over two consecutive Saturdays.

Date: Saturday, May 6 and 13, 2017
Time: 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Location: Hospice of Santa Barbara, 2050 Alameda Padre Serra, Suite #100, Santa Barbara 93103

For more information and a mentor application, please visit hospiceofsb.org or contact Nicole Romasanta, Director of Volunteer Services, at (805) 563-8820.

Save the Date: Next HSB Art Exhibition Begins Feb.9

Calling all art lovers! We're proud to welcome local artist Kat Martin and her solo-art exhibition to the Leigh Block Gallery within Hospice of  Santa Barbara with an opening reception at 6:00 p.m. Feb. 9.

Kat moved to Santa Barbara in search of a warmer climate after her own personal health issues. In gratitude for her own healthy recovery, she became a Hospice of Santa Barbara volunteer. While showing her artwork to a French patient, they decided to give them all French names.

Kat will donate 25% of the proceeds from her art sales to Hospice of Santa Barbara

Planned Giving to Hospice of Santa Barbara

For many of us, there is a compelling need to make a difference - to leave a lasting impact on the people most dear to us and the world in which we live. The search for significance and desire to plan for the future leads many to ponder their legacy. What kind of legacy will you leave?

To learn more about how you can leave your legacy and Hospice of Santa Barbara, please contact Judy Goodbody, Planned Giving Officer at 805 563-8820 ext. 124 or email jgoodbody@hospiceofsb.org. For more about wills, trusts and other planned giving options, visit hsbgift.com.

A Love Letter to the Future

There's one thing about life that will never change: "No one ever gets out of here alive."

So what can you do now that will help a loved one later, when your time on earth has ended? You may have signed your Will, Trust and other legal papers, but there's one more thing that could be invaluable to someone who will grieve for you. What if you write a letter expressing your love, sharing special memories, providing closure if there has been discord? What other things would you say to help a loved one heal at the time of your passing? You could file that sealed letter with your important papers with instructions that it will be delivered later to one who needs your comfort.
In this workshop, you have an emotionally safe place to write that special letter, with help from someone who has been widowed twice and knows how meaningful a love letter to the future can be.
Marilee Zdeneck is the author of seven books, including her memoir, "Between Fires."
Friday Feb. 10, 1-4:30 p.m.

Join the Year to Live Support Group

What would it be like if knew we had only one year to live? This year-long group is for anyone who would like to devote the year to enrich their lives, and to savor every moment. Based on Stephen Levine's book A Year to Love, we meet Friday mornings once a month beginning Jan. 23 to explore life and death in a foundation of mindfulness. Together we will live this year as though it were our last. For more, call Amara at (805) 563-8820
Solo Art Exhibition by John Schlesinger
It's not too late to see the work of late artist John Schlesinger at the Leigh Block Gallery, located within Hospice of Santa Barbara.  John's amazing solo art exhibition will be on display until Jan. 24, and you can schedule a viewing by calling (805) 563-8820.
