I have to admit, in the preceding days, I did not
really get into the whole eclipse thing. Possibly because I got bogged down with working to create an experience for the reported to be masses of lookers that were going to descend upon Western North Carolina i.e. downtown Waynesville. But when the day hit, it was impossible not to get caught up in the excitement and I am glad that I did. There were no special viewing plans other than stepping out of the gallery for a gaze, which turned out to be an awesome experience.
Donning gallery created bedazzled glasses I saw a 99% disappearance of the sun as the temperature dropped and the street lights came on. The unexpected treat was seeing shadow snakes dancing all around and the crescent shaped shadows that formed under the trees. At the peak a cheer burst out from a group at Boojums. Hundreds of thousands of people traveled to the area for this unprecedented sight and left with the memory of an experience that will stay with them forever. It was a community with one common goal .... to see history in the making.
Sharon Gallimore has been working in the gallery almost as long as I have. In our 11th year, that is dedication. She has decided, for numerous reasons, to hang up her gallery shoes. Sharon always had a recipe to share for

A North Carolina resident since 1967, Sarah Sneeden is a native of Pennsylvania. She graduated from Centenary College in New Jersey, the Famous Artists School, the New York Institute of Photography, and the Portrait Institute of New York. Annual workshops in the West have added experience and new ideas to her painting repertoire. A voracious reader, Sarah's extensive art library keeps the art world at her fingertips.
Sarah's 40 years of experience, distinctive style and versatility are evident in her original and innumerable works of art. She likes watercolors, prismacolor pencils, and pastels for sketching but prefers the permanency of oils for her finished pieces. When she can find a sunny spot, Sarah's favorite way of working is en plein air - working out-of-doors on location where she can study firsthand the play of light on her subject. Interpreting reality with sure brush strokes, rich color and verve, Sarah experiments with the season and the subject, always seeking that play of light. Larger pieces are completed in her studio.
Oil painter Sarah Sneeden will be demonstrating in Twigs and Leaves Gallery during Art After Dark Friday, September 1, 6-9PM. Sarah's energy as she paints is like a rhythmic dance as her strokes come to life on the canvas. Friday evening, as you stroll through the gallery's 140+ primarily regional artists, enjoy guitar music by Steve Wohlrab along with pianist Iva Veazey, and delight in the savory hors d'eurves.

Allen spent his professional years as head of two Florida corporations. With leisure time to be filled in 1997, the retired executive revived his interest in woodcraft, dormant since his teen years in Industrial Art classes in high school. Largely self-taught, he works from his studio/shop in Waynesville, NC, surrounded by great stacks of logs, stumps, branches, roots, castoff cuts, rejected knotty burls, and other natural resources awaiting transformation. Bartered treasures from other craftsmen - pottery & glass - often add artistic function to his turned bowls and trays.
Well known for his focus on polychromatic segmented woodturning, his bowls, lidded urns, platters and ikebana involve the use of native hardwoods, layered alternately with imported exotic hardwoods. His pieces originate from precision-cut shapes, glued together, then formed into a "blank." Large urns usually contain 450+ cut shapes. Each is turned, and then finished with food-safe natural oils and waxes. No dyes or stains are employed.
Davis
attended the University of Miami, FL, the John C. Campbell Folk School and has studied privately with recognized wood turning specialists. He's a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, American Association of Woodturners, and Carolina Mountain Woodturners.
