Update on Elsa, Ana and Sven! They are actually Elsa, Kristoff and Sven!
When these dogs were brought to our shelter recently, even our most seasoned volunteers were stunned. Our requests for help were heard by the community and the transformation began the next day. One of our volunteers, Pam Ewert, as well as Summer Bettis and KY Henderson from Groomingtails gave up their Sunday afternoon to work on these poor dogs. When a dog's coat gets like this it is terribly painful as the mats pull at their skin when they move. In addition, the matting was affecting their ability to see, hear and eat! The grooming operation lasted about four hours. As you can tell from the title of the article, the groomers did find two little surprises!

All three dogs were patient and well mannered during the grooming- even though it was a long day for them. Now on for more vetting and heartworm treatment. These dogs promise to be wonderful beautiful pets. Thank you to all who helped with their care- we will continue to keep you posted.

For more information about Summer Bettis and Groomingtails call 706-529-7762. Groomingtails is located at 801 E. Walnut Avenue. You can find her on Facebook at  https://www.facebook.com/SummersGroomingtails/

Tips on Finding Your Lost Cat
New Shelter Update
Our contractor, Felker Construction has completed the initial grading and the pad is in place. Heyward-Baker will be moving in the first week of September to install geopiers to support the building. This is the most cost effective way to deal with the poor soil at this location.

While it seems so far away, the building completion is slated for April. This means it is already time to be selecting interior finishes! Alan Peeples, an officer and principal at Chadwell and Associates and Cathy Snyder with Greg Sims Architect have already begun this exciting process!
A Volunteer Behind the Scenes - Palmer Griffin
Tell us about yourself - what is your background and how did you end up in Dalton? My career has been in education; classroom teacher, coach and every administrative position possible except superintendent. I was fortunate to earn my degrees at two quality universities in North Alabama. The Griffin family, including three day old Rob, came to Dalton in 1988 with my move into educational administration. We had previously been in a community that I had opportunities to serve students in all ages groups (K-12) over a three year period, that was a lot to learn in that short time span so coming to Dalton got me settled into the early elementary age for several years. The citizens of Dalton have a long and positive history of supporting public education with their children, with their finances and with their presence at school activities.

Tell us about your family - including any pets you have - My wife is Laura who has volunteered with HSNWGA for many years. Our son, Rob, and his wife Mary Courtney live in Suwanee, Georgia. Rob is a steel provider in the construction industry and Mary Courtney is, get this, a veterinarian in Gwinnett County. In our 34 years of marriage we have been the owners of two collies, two labs and now two Heinz breeds. Four of these six have been rescues, one literally off of the street. (Note: The two “Heinz” breeds that live with the Griffins are Scruffy and Boomer- they were adopted from the HSNWGA several years ago.)

Why did you decide to start volunteering with the HSNWGA? Well, truth be told a driveway meeting with the HSNWGA Executive Director got me started; one does not say “NO” to Devon and get away with it!  As I’ve previously said, Laura has done some volunteer work and I got hood-winked into helping out on the Shelter Project. It was felt that I had the skill set from my career in education that I could assist in the planning of the shelter and then make observations as the construction of the Shelter takes place- right in my skill set.

What does your volunteer work entail?  At the present time, I am on the project site 2-3 days a week observing the work in progress. I take photos and make notes that help the HSNWGA keep up with the progress. From time to time I make observations that are helpful to the construction team in their work. This time commitment will increase as the building comes out of the ground and the pace picks up.

Do you volunteer anywhere else? My other volunteer work is at ChristChurch Presbyterian. I have been an officer at CCP for many years and worked in the church office since my retirement from Dalton Public Schools in 2012.

What is your work background? My career was spent with children; their development and education in all ages and grades. My educational philosophy in a sentence is “The school day should be the most positive hours of a child’s day”. This can take many forms in the course of the day, but bottom line is that my heart is with the education of children so that they can learn and then compete in the career field of their choice.

What would you like to see in the future for the HSNWGA? WOW, what a visionary question! Knowing that people will always have challenges with the ownership and management of pets, it’d be great for the HSNWGA to have a facility and volunteers to assist citizens that need help with their pets. Whether needing food on a short term basis, needing help with spay/neuter, helping a citizen to find a new home for their pet when changes in life come and lastly taking in and taking care of unwanted and unloved pets. There is a lot in that statement and the services that need to be brought to bear but the construction of this new shelter and the opportunities that it provides is a great step in that direction.

Anything you want to add? I’m glad that I had that driveway meeting with Devon and pleased that I can use my skills from my career in education to assist others.

Note:  For the past year and a half- Palmer Griffin has volunteered for the Humane Society of Northwest Georgia - you just don’t know it! A retired educator, Palmer managed multiple building projects for the Dalton Public School system as Director of Operations. A long time family friend and neighbor (our children Rob and Ali were classmates) I knew his thoroughness, construction experience and attention to detail would be an asset to our organization.  I just didn’t know how much! As the contract for the construction of our new shelter became a reality, I cornered um, approached Palmer and asked for his assistance. Thankfully he agreed to come on board. He visits the site several times a week and provides detailed reports on construction progress. In addition, he has closely reviewed the plans and is able to help us make informed decisions as the project gets more complicated. Finally, Palmer always keeps our budget in mind as we move forward and encounter changes in the plans. The service he provides to our organization is invaluable and we will have a better shelter for it.

Thank you Palmer!
-Devon

Praters Mill Fundraiser - Saturday and Sunday Oct 14 and 15
This year, for the first time, the Humane Society of NWGA will be selling all natural pet treats in a booth at Praters Mill! The dates are Saturday, October 14th from 9-6 and Sunday, October 15th from 9- 5. We need your help!

We need treat makers and treat bakers and someone to keep track of who is making what! Treats can be baked or dehydrated and frozen so we can have plenty on hand for the big weekend. Some great treat ideas can be found on Pinterest - and if you want some dog themed cookie cutters get with Devon!

The Jenkins/Joyce sisters will be designing the booth but would love some help. Also will need help Friday, October 13 to set up and Sunday evening to take down.

We will need some folks Saturday and Sunday for sales. Just commit a few hours and then enjoy the fair. Smiling faces required.

Email Devon at [email protected] if you want to help or have any ideas for our booth! Thanks!
A Day for Dalton at Dalton State College
Wednesday, August 16, our organization participated in A Day for Dalton at Dalton State College. We had the opportunity to meet with students and faculty and let them know about the volunteer possibilities available within our organization. Lizett Porras, a Biology major at DSC and volunteer for the HSNWGA, helped host our table and encourage volunteers to sign up. We had lots of interest and hope to see new faces at our shelter soon! If you have questions about volunteering, email [email protected] or go to our website and fill out an application at  https://hsnwga.org/get-involved/volunteer/ .
Mountain Creek Harley Davidson Dog Days of Summer

Volunteer Opportunities
Want to volunteer but can't commit to a shift for kennel duty? Here are some other ways to help! Just go online to www.hsnwga.org and fill out an application form and let us know where your interests are. If you have another skill or something you'd like to share- just let us know!

  • Be a PetCo Ambassador!  Sign up with a friend and one weekend afternoon take a couple of our dogs to PetCo. It only takes a few hours and you can do it one time or commit to one shift a month!
  • Special Event Adoption Teams! The Humane Society of Northwest Georgia often gets invited to special adoption events. These are one time events that generally only last a few hours but are great publicity for our pets and can lead to adoptions. Add your name to this list and you will be contacted when these events occur to see if you are available.
  • Kennel Duty or Cattery Substitute! Can't commit to a shift but wouldn't mind subbing occasionally? This is a perfect way to interact with the animals and make a big impact.
  • Tech Support! Help create spreadsheets and teach friendly grandmotherly types to enter and share data. Introduce them to the world of social media.
