December Students of the Month
Zoe Chang-2017

Senior Zoe Chang has had four memorable years at North Hunterdon.  She is the President of Spanish Honor Society, a member of National Honor Society, English Honor Society, and Math Honor Society.  Zoe is also a member of the after school choir, Madrigals, plays lacrosse, is involved in Model UN, and has been an attorney in Mock Trial since freshman year.  Her favorite classes at North have been Biology, AP Language, and U.S. Government.  Her teachers in these classes were amazing and truly cared about students’ education and well-being.  They also challenged her each day with controversial social, political, and economic issues.  The knowledge Zoe took away from these classes went beyond textbook facts.  Outside North, Zoe interns at a local law firm because she wants to eventually study law and become a criminal lawyer.  She attends Chinese school, plays the piano, sings in NJMEA All State Women’s Choir, and is involved in volunteer work.  She is an assistant teacher and camp counselor for Art classes at the Hunterdon Parks and Recreation.  Zoe recently had the amazing experience of teaching English to Taiwanese students in Taiwan for a month in the summer.  Next fall, Zoe plans on pursuing Psychology and Criminology so she can attend law school to become a criminal attorney.
Nicholas LaBelle-2017

Nicholas LaBelle is a senior who is actively involved in many extra-curricular activities at North.  He is President of Student Council, President of German Honor Society, Vice President of English Honor Society, involved in National Honor Society, Habitat for Humanity, Thespian Honor Society, is the Captain of Warren Hunterdon Academic Meet (WHAM), and is President and Saxophone Section Leader for the Golden Lions Marching Band.  Outside of North, Nicholas is involved in Boy Scouts on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout.  He is also Chair of the Council for Economic Advancement for Model United Nations, is the Awarded Premier Speaker for Youth and Government, and is involved in the United States Senate Youth Program.  Nicholas’ favorite classes have been AP World History with Mr. Yocum and AP Economics with Mr. McSweeney.  Both of these classes allowed the world to be viewed in a different perspective.  This is important because one must know the past in order to change the future.  Nicholas’ favorite memory at North is playing with the Golden Lion Marching Band each Friday night for the past four years.  Next year, Nicholas would like to attend the University of Chicago to major in Economics.

December Athletes of the Month
Annelise Babcock-2017

Annelise Babcock has been on the Varsity cheerleading team for four years.  This year Annelise is the captain of both the Spirit Squad and the Competition Squad.  She has helped the team place 7th at Nationals her freshman year, 10th her sophomore year, and 7th her junior year.  So far the team has received 1st place at three of their competitions, including the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex and Skylands Conferences.  They have also earned a bid to the UCA National Cheerleading Championships.  Annelise has been cheering competitively since she was ten years old with the Hunterdon Huskies, Junior Lions, and Immaculate Conception.  She was a junior coach for the Hunterdon Huskies youth cheerleading team for the past four years.  Annelise also tumbles and trains at an outside gym.  Her strengths are that she is hardworking and determined.  This year, Annelise has become a UCA All-American cheerleader and a member of the New Jersey Cheer and Dance Team Coaches Association All-State team.  Outside of cheering, Annelise participates in Interact, Student Ambassadors, National Honor Society, and Science National Honor Society.  She plans on cheerleading competitively in college at the Division 1 level.  Annelise is undecided what school she will attend, but is pursuing a major in Biological Sciences as a Pre-Med major.

Andrew Berger-2017

Tri-captain, Andrew Berger has been playing basketball since he was 4 years old.  Some of Andrew’s strongest skills are his leadership, his athleticism, including jumping ability, and his work ethic.  He is a strong leader and can make good decisions on the court quickly.  Andrew is known for his numerous and creative bench celebrations to help motivate the team.  He also holds the informal dunk record for the North team.  Andrew plays the power forward/center position.  He feels very fortunate to have a leadership role as one of the captains and is looking forward to a very competitive season.  As a junior, Andrew averaged 4.5 ppg coming off the bench.  He played a big part in helping the team advance to the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex semifinals as well as the quarterfinals round of the North Group 4 Tournament.  Andrew also volunteered at the high school summer basketball camp.  He is the Vice President of the National Honor Society, is a Peer Leader, is a member of Interact, and is involved in Special Olympics.  Andrew plans on playing club basketball in college next year.  He is undecided where he will be going, but he plans on majoring in Business Information Systems.

Photography Student Showcase
Robert Judice '17

My Inspiration for photography stems from my fascination with the alternate perspective. Finding ways to capture and visualize situations that are often overlooked or unperceived is what drives me to continue taking snapshots of ordinary objects under extraordinary conditions -  Robert Judice '17.

Computer Science Education Week, December 5-9, 2016
The Hour of Code is a global movement joining over 164,000 events around the world that introduce and promote coding through fun tasks.

During Computer Science Education Week, the media center had a great display that gave out information regarding Computer Science for the week’s duration.  Throughout the week, many teachers had students log onto http://hourofcode.com/us to try different activities.  Students could program a game using Scratch-like drag and drop steps, learn the basics of JavaScript and Python programming languages, or make an app to share.   Students could build a galaxy in Star Wars, create a MineCraft adventure, make Anna from Frozen ice skate in different patterns, or help Moana and Maui as they sailed through unknown territory across the ocean.  Students were also sent an email that gave additional resources that they could try on their own.

The Hour of Code was well-received.  Students worked on the activities during several classes and during their study halls (information was given to all students and staff members).  Certificates of achievement were printed by the students and dropped into bins for Amazon gift card prizes.  The winners of the Amazon gift cards were Ethan Avecillas, Adler Hartfelder-Denney, and Peyton Jordan.

All in all, it was a great event that expanded the awareness of Computer Science.
