Virtual Reality Field Trip

Sarah Burleigh exploring Mt. Everest
Gina Golda's sixth grade social studies classes took a virtual reality field trip to Mt. Everest as part of their lesson on China last Friday. Using Google Cardboard, they were able to see a 360 degree view of Mt. Everest.

Google Cardboard is a virtual reality platform used with a smartphone that is placed in a head mount. To use the platform, a user runs cardboard-compatible applications on his/her phone and places the phone into the back of the viewer and views content through the lenses.

Google Cardboard brings lessons to life and allows students to take field trips virtually anywhere. Ms. Golda says "Now that I have 2 devices, we will continue to do this in the classroom as we move through ancient history."
Parlez-vous Français?

Kaylen Howe, Isabelle McCall and French Teacher Sam Ricciuti
Following the completion of French AP last year, juniors Isabelle McCall and Kaylen Howe traveled to the Alliance Française de La Nouvelle-Orléans in New Orleans to take the DELF junior test. The four part test included: an essay section, a reading comprehension section, a listening comprehension section, and a 20 minute interview entirely in French. Their high scores qualified them to receive level B2 diploma's.

The DELF diploma is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of Education in France to certify the competency of students in the French language outside of France. They are similar to university degrees in that they confirm language proficiency and are valid for life. There are six levels of the CEF (Common European Framework of reference for Languages): A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Level B2 is described as vantage or upper intermediate. Individuals that test at the B2 level are independent users of the language.

French III, French IV and French AP teacher Samuel Ricciuti is making plans to host the test on the Runnels campus in April. Giving his students this test allows them to assess their skills and gives him the opportunity to teach on a level where the students are not only comfortable but challenged.

Receiving the DELF diploma gives the students a legitimate reward for the hard work they have put into learning the language which can be used in their future careers. Both Kaylen and Isabelle hope to travel abroad for college and/or participate in an exchange program in France.

We will have a follow up story with more information as the test date approaches.

The ticket booth
Runnels softball and baseball parents are rallying together to prepare the  Concession Stand and Ticket Box for the upcoming season.  They are collecting shelving, supplies and lumber to replace the items lost in the flood.

The Concession Stand was brought down to studs during the restorations and the Ticket Box sustained some exterior damage. "We hope to come back bigger, better and stronger," said Melanie Hyatt. So far they have received a few monetary donations and some appliances. Hyatt's daughter, Bailey, is a 9th grader on the softball team.

Hyatt and a crew of parent volunteers are working to get these areas ready for the opening game on February 20th.

Items needed by the 1st of February are:

Hot dog & burger warmer
Fryer
Grilling tools Lumber
Nacho cheese machine
Electric tea kettle
Heat lamp
Shelving units
Roasting pans
Small ice maker
Large plastic bins
Monetary donations are welcome.

Donors will be recognized based on the level of their gift with either a listing on a donor board or an individual sign on the field.  Please contact Melanie Hyatt at 409-617-2281 to donate or for more information.

Oodles of Noodle Towers

Parker Rhinehart

During lunch on Monday, members of the Future Scientists and Engineer Club were challenged to build a structure strong enough to support the weight of a jumbo marshmallow.  The twist was they had to build it with only the following materials: 20 uncooked spaghetti noodles, one foot-long piece of freezer tape, one foot long piece of yarn, and one jumbo marshmallow.  The team with the tallest structure would win.

After much trial and error, the teams began to build their structures. With limited time before the bell rang, teams scrambled to complete their task.  In the end, Parker Rhinehart's Eiffel Tower approach earned him a win in this friendly competition.

Teachers Take Disney
Michelle Harper and Mary Winnett

Harper and Winnett completed the Dopey Challenge and left Disney with lots of "bling" (medals). Harper's husband, Chad, joined them on the trip and completed his first marathon.

A Gift from the Heart

The Runnels Preschool received a generous and anonymous gift of an automated external defibrillator (AED) this week. An AED is a portable electronic device that aids with cardiac emergencies by treating them with electrical therapy through the process of defibrillation. This allows the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

Each summer, the preschool staff receives CPR and AED training. Preschool nurse, Valerie Myer, gave the staff a refresher course this week with the new device. It will be a great asset to the staff at the preschool.

Hero Spotlight Correction

From left: Katelyn Bush, Elementary Librarian Joni Orgeron and 5th grader, Molly Bush.
Last week's story, Birthday Books, incorrectly identified 5th grader, Molly Bush, as the book donor. The books were donated by Molly's family's friend, Katelyn Bush (no relation) from Alexandria, LA. We apologize for this error.

After hearing about the flood damage from her friend Molly, Katelyn decided she wanted to use her upcoming birthday to help the Elementary Library. She asked friends and family to donate children's books to the library for her birthday instead of presents.

Last Friday, Katelyn and her mother, Jane Ann Bush, visited the library to deliver several bags full of books donated in honor of Katelyn's birthday. Many thanks to Katelyn for her thoughtful donation to our library.
