Last Day of School
January 18, 2017

Dear St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Families,

Parents have traditionally taught their children about the dangers associated with crossing the street and engaging with strangers. Parents also monitor the books their kids read as well as the TV programs and movies they watch.  Today, however, parents face a very different challenge keeping their kids safe on the internet. Due to the rapid and significant changes brought about by advances in technology, it is difficult for parents to understand how to protect their children from the potential hazards of the internet.

Despite the hazards, the internet is one of the greatest tools ever invented to enhance student learning.  In many ways, technology has profoundly impacted education by changing the teaching and learning process. Technology is a powerful tool that can support education by transforming how students access information and learn, how teachers deliver curriculum, and how students work together.  But, like most everything, there's a flipside.  The internet can be dangerous.

Educators and parents share the same concerns when it comes to keeping our kids safe. Together, we have a responsibility to protect our children and teach them how to use the internet properly and effectively.  At school, we promote safe and appropriate use of technology by implementing filters that control access to the internet, by monitoring student activity when using the internet, by teaching students how to use the internet as an educational tool, and by setting boundaries and applying consequences for violating appropriate use policies.

The best protection against the dangers of the internet is knowledge.  Teachers, parents, and students need to be educated about how to safely use the internet and how to avoid hazards. In support of education, last week we invited an expert to talk to our students and parents about internet safety and hosted a presentation on cyber safety.  Sergeant Clayton Cranford spoke to 6th - 8th grade students about common vulnerabilities to their safety and how they can make their social networks secure.  He also stressed the importance of maintaining a positive online reputation.  Later that evening, Sergeant Cranford conducted a two hour workshop for parents. He explained the different social media platforms and their risks, the significance of using privacy controls, how to set expectations and consequences, and the importance of creating balance with life and technology.  The workshop presentation provided parents with tools to help properly supervise their children's online activities.  A valuable resource available at the meeting was the book "Parenting in a Digital World: A Step-By-Step Guide to Internet Safety".  The easy to read book provides an overview of the most popular apps with step-by-step instructions on how to manage your child's online activities.  I strongly encourage parents to review this book and other resources that provide information about how to protect your kids while using the internet.  Parents may also check www.cybersafetycop.com and the Cyber Safety Cop Facebook page for news, updates, and upcoming workshops.

Together we can keep our kids safe while enjoying the benefits of the digital world.

SCHOOL NEWS
2017 / 2018 School Year Enrollment
Thank you to all families who returned their Sibling Interest Forms for Preschool - 8th Grade and Letters of Intent to Return for Preschool/Pre-K.  This information is very helpful when forecasting enrollment for the 2017/2018 School Year and allows us to give priority to our current families prior to offering available spots to new families.  Applications for current siblings will be sent home in this week's Thursday Folders.

Please be aware, the 2017/2018 enrollment forms sent home on January 5 were intended for returning Preschool/Pre-K students and new sibling students only.   Intent to Return Forms will be sent home February 16 to all students currently attending St. Francis Kindergarten through 7th Grade  who will be continuing their enrollment in the 2017/2018 School Year.
Open House!
January 29, 2017
Please mark your calendar for this year's Open House, taking place Sunday, January 29, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

You won't want to miss this special day as we celebrate our school and showcase what makes St. Francis such an amazing "home" for our visiting families.

Promotion Weekend - January 22 and 23!
In preparation for Open House, all three parishes will be promoting St. Francis and encouraging families to visit our Open House event by sharing more about our school at all masses the weekend of January 21 and 22.

If you are one of our tri-parish families, you should have received an email from your parish liaison identifying some fun ways to get involved.  Please consider signing up to serve as an ambassador for our school in some capacity during this weekend.

If you happen to attend another Catholic Church, but would like to help at one of the three parishes, please contact Tammy Clarida in the school office for more information.

All St. Francis students should be dressed in full "Mass Uniform" when participating and/or attending mass during Promotional Weekend.

All students dressed as ambassadors of St. Francis, in school uniform, will earn a "Relaxed Dress" privilege for Monday, January 23.
Open House Food / Refreshment Donations
St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School will open its doors for our Annual Open House on Sunday, January 29.  This event is part of a weeklong celebration for Catholic schools and Catholic education.

The Spirit Committee is in the process of planning for our Open House hospitality.  We respectfully request assistance from all St. Francis families by providing food and beverages for the event.  Please check the list below for needed items.  The list has been designed to provide for an assortment of items and is sorted according to your last name.

A wagon will be outside our school entrance to collect donations on Thursday, January 26 during drop off and pickup, and during drop off only on Friday, January 27.  If we miss you, please seal your perishable items, mark items "Open House", and drop them off in the kitchen at the Seamus Glynn Center.  All items except for donuts and fruit can be dropped off at the wagon on Thursday and Friday.

If you would like to donate an additional homemade baked item (quantity of 2 dozen or more for cookies, cupcakes, brownies, etc.), you may do so in order to earn 2 hours credit towards family service hours.  If you wish to bake an item for Open House, please advise Michelle Leo at [email protected] what kind of baked item you will be bringing.  Bakers please log your own volunteer hours online through www.sycamoreeducation.com.  We ask that you still bring in your assigned item (below) so that we can be sure to have an appropriate assortment of refreshments needed to make our Open House a success.

Thank you in advance for your continued and generous support of our children and our school.

Blessings,
Michelle Leo

VOLUNTEER NEWS
We Love Volunteers!

We are still in need of carline volunteers in the morning.  We need help on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and most especially Thursdays.  Please contact Karen Carlos at [email protected]
if you would like to help.  Thank you!

Open House Volunteers Needed!
We are in need of volunteers to help with various tasks on January 29, 2017 at our Open House event. Click here to see a full list of the volunteer opportunities available.

Become a Part of "Team Tour" for Open House!
We are in need of some fun, friendly parents to serve as part of "Team Tour" during Open House.  These parents play a very critical role by serving as tour guide ambassadors to visiting families, welcoming them in and answering questions.  You are essentially the face of St. Francis and may be just the person that assists and guides them in making that important school decision!

No experience is necessary: Tour Guide training will be available on Monday, January 23 at 8:05 am, 2:00 pm and 6:30 pm.  Consider signing up to do a tour or two. It's really fun!  For more information or to join "Team Tour" please visit our Open House 2017 Signup  http://signup.com/go/SHdLtY .  Or contact Tammy Clarida in the admissions office.

Become a Part of "Carline Crew" for Open House!
We are also in need of volunteers for our Carline Crew at Open House.  If you are interested in becoming part of this fun-loving, hard-working group please contact Karen Carlos at [email protected].
Auction Gala Volunteers Needed!
We are looking for parent volunteers to help at the Annual Auction Gala on February 25, 2017.

Assignments are open for set-up, activities during the event, and clean-up.  For more specific information on positions and hours available please contact Karen Carlos via email at [email protected].

Additionally, we are looking for alumni volunteers to help on the day of the event.  If you know a St. Francis graduate that is looking for service hours or just wants to be a part of this fun evening, please have them contact Karen Carlos via email at [email protected].

Chairpersons Needed!
Carline Crew

Karen Carlos has been the head of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Carline Crew for nearly 15 years now.  With the graduation of her youngest son, Christopher, in June Karen will be retiring her parking lot wave.  We will need a new Chairperson to fill her shoes for the 2017-2018 school year (and beyond). Ideally this new Chair would have the opportunity to shadow Karen as she carries out her role for the remainder of the school year.  In particular it would be helpful to see how the Carline Chair participates in our Open House event at the end of January each year.

Please contact Karen Carlos at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about becoming the St. Francis Carline Chairperson.
