GVR Update! for Friday, January 13, 2017

GENERAL NEWS
Wheelchair Tennis Exhibition and Run 'n Roll
Saturday, January 14, 10am-12pm

David Wagner and Bryan Barten USA won the British Open

Come watch some great tennis and amazing athletes!

The GVR Tennis Club is honored to announce that Paralympian
Bryan Barten, Head Coach of the University of Arizona Wheelchair Tennis Team, will bring his team to Green Valley for an exhibition at the
GVR West Tennis Center at 1111 West GVR Drive. Register by following the instructions on the  Wheelchair Exhibition Registration Form.  Attendance is free but we'd like to know you are coming and we need to know if you want to play.  Lunch (hamburger, fixings, and sides) is an optional $7.50.

Bryan was named by USTA as one of eight players to represent the USA as a member of the 2016 U.S. Paralympian Wheelchair Tennis Team. He has been rated in the top ten of wheelchair tennis players for both singles and doubles.

Two additional University of Arizona Wheelchair Tennis Players to attend our event are Dana Mathewson and Hunter Groce, were also selected to represent the USA at the 2016 World Team Cup Wheelchair Tennis Championships.

A total of 10 local wheelchair tennis players will participate.  Many of these players will be competing in the USTA 2017 EZMED Arizona Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships to be held at Reffkin Tennis Center on March 16 through 19 th. Mark your calendars.

So, expect to see a high level of wheelchair tennis!

Following the Exhibition, there will be a "Run 'n Roll" where wheelchair tennis players will be paired with GVR tennis "runners" for doubles competition.  The rules of wheelchair tennis are the same as regular tennis with the exception that two bounces are allowed before returning the tennis ball.

The most recent issue of USTA's Tennis Magazine highlighted wheelchair tennis.  Instructor Dan James is quoted saying "The first thing you think of when you hear wheelchair tennis is, 'Well, that's good for them for getting out and playing.  We need to get past that. As soon as you see them play, you forget the wheelchair.  The level of athletic ability required in wheelchair tennis is off the charts.'"

Claudia Dill , former University of Arizona Coach and USPTA Certified Wheelchair Tennis Pro, who has been Bryan's coach since 1997, will also be in attendance.  She will make some remarks about skills unique to wheelchair tennis, and provide play-by-play and color commentary during the Exhibition and Run 'n Roll.  For example, one interesting skill of wheelchair tennis is known as "reverse mobility". That is, between shots, wheelchair players turn and race backwards on the court, turn forward, and then move forward to the ball for the next shot.  This also allows them to pivot left or right as needed.

We look forward to seeing you there!  We will also have a wheelchair available to use if you'd like to give wheelchair tennis a try.

Go the GVR Tennis Club website at www.GVTennis.com if you need to contact us.

Green Valley Council Announces
New Online Medical Directory

The Health and Human Services Committee of the GV Council proudly announces that the Medical Directory for the Green Valley - Sahuarita area is now up on their website. The Medical Directory has been developed by the all-volunteer Medical Directory Sub-committee of the H & HS Committee as a public service for the community. The Directory contains listings of physicians and other health care providers who have offices and provide services in the Green Valley - Sahuarita area. The site has a "search" function that allows users to find both individual providers, medical organizations by name and also by specialty or other types of health care services.

To reach the site go to www.gvcouncil.org, then look on the right side of the home page and click on Medical Directory.

GVR Foundation received a small grant from the Greater Green Valley Community Foundation (GGVCF) to partner with GVC and GGVCF to produce a promotional flyer for all Green Valley residents about the Online Medical Directory.

Planning & Evaluation Committee will meet on Tuesday, January 17  at 11 a.m. at MSC. Part of this meeting will be focused on elements of the 10 Year Strategic Master Plan, sub-committee projects (see below).

It is very early in the Master Planning work process. However, the Criteria sub-committee, is working hard to establish an evaluation structure to rate the merits of individual projects. This rating system will determine a projects value and how it will best serve our GVR membership.

The GVR Master Plan was accepted by the GVR Board of Directors on September 27, 2016. This means that each individual Master Plan project, will need to be individually approved by the P&E Committee and then advanced to the GVR Board for final approval. The P&E Committee is chaired by GVR Director, John Arnold.
  • The Facilities Subcommittee is actively evaluating potential sites to re-location than West Center for GVR's Facilities/Maintenance Department and vehicle fleet, with the added potential for member artisan and craft club use. The Facilities Department deals with more back-of-the-house maintenance functions and has relatively low interface with Membership.  The Facilities subcommittee is chaired by GVR Member, Stewart Tagg. On-going
  • The Criteria Subcommittee was formed to establish criteria that will measure benefits of particular projects and how they will best serve our overall GVR Membership. The Criteria subcommittee is chaired by GVR Director, Don Lathrop. On-going.
  • The Pickleball Center Subcommittee was established to focus on development of a GVR Pickleball Center (complex). The Pickleball Center subcommittee is chaired by GVR Director, Kathy Palese. On-going
  • The Hub at West Center Subcommittee was formed to examine the value and opportunity of developing "The Hub at West Center" which would act as a social gathering place with inspiring indoor-outdoor spaces, state-of-the-art Fitness Center, member meeting spaces and administrative offices. The Hub subcommittee is chaired by GVR Director, Jim Nelson. On-going.

At GVR "Membership Matters"

Membership matters at Green Valley Recreation, so in August GVR initiated a campaign to spot check for ID cards at all GVR centers. The program has been very well received by members, tenants and guests. Nearly everyone has thanked staff for doing the ID checks. They have been very cooperative and understand GVR's purpose is to protect their membership rights.

The program is called "Membership Matters" and consists of teams of two GVR employees visiting all 13 centers on a random basis asking for IDs from individuals in all areas, including spaces used by clubs, tenants and guests. Exempt areas are those open to the public, such as classes, concerts or lectures.

GVR is doing these ID checks to reduce facility and program crowding, facility wear-and-tear, and maintenance and operations costs, while improving security and adding value to GVR membership.

GVR governance policies require all GVR members, tenants and guests to carry their ID card when visiting our facilities. Those who have misplaced or lost their cards may receive a replacement card at any of our staff centers. Individuals renting homes deeded to GVR have been discovered using annual guests cards, instead of tenant cards, which is a common mistake. Those individuals have been able to get the appropriate card by completing a "Tenant Request Form" signed by the owner, and paying the appropriate fee.

All checks are done at random and no particular area, individual or club is targeted.

We wish you a happy, healthy new year!

VOLUNTEER UPDATES
Pool and Fitness Center Volunteer Updates

Green Valley Recreation currently is in the process of reviewing and revising rules and guidelines for pool and fitness center operations, and once that process is complete, new signs will be posted at GVR centers.

At that time, Volunteer Schedule Boards will be removed and new "Volunteer On Duty" signs will be posted. With the Volunteer Flex Program, volunteers need not commit to specific days and times, but rather are "on duty" when they are there during their regular exercise time. Volunteers may swim or work out and more than one volunteer may monitor at the same time.

GVR is migrating to a new database system in 2017 to manage member information, reservations, class registration, ticket sales and other aspects of GVR operations. How information is stored is very different with the new system, so it is not necessary for volunteers to have a second ID card to swipe when they are on duty. They will use their regular member or tenant card and the system "knows" this person is a volunteer.

As a result, the current GVR volunteer ID cards are no longer active as of Wednesday, January 11 . Volunteers should swipe-in with their regular GVR ID card. They also will have sign-in sheets soon at the centers until the full database transition is complete.

Pool and fitness center Volunteer Staff Coordinators will be members of the team creating the new Volunteer Advisory Committee, but no longer will meet as a group.

Special Pricing for GVR Members at Jim Click Benefits GVR Foundation

A partnership between Green Valley Recreation, Inc. and Jim Click Automotive in Green Valley not only gives GVR members special pricing on vehicles, but also supports the newly established tax-exempt GVR Foundation.

Under the agreement, GVR members and employees receive special pricing on new and used vehicles and a 15-percent discount on service and repairs. The new program was announced and effective on July 24, 2015.

To receive the discount, GVR members need to complete an Eligibility Form at the Member Services Center or West Center Office, give the original form to the Jim Click sales associate and show their GVR ID card. The discount offers are good only at Jim Click Automotive's Green Valley location.

With every new or used vehicle purchased by a GVR member or employee, Jim Click Automotive will donate $100 to the GVR Foundation.

"Jim Click Automotive is well known in our community for its commitment to high quality, reliable service and good corporate citizenship. The GVR Foundation, GVR and Jim Click all share a mutual understanding of the importance of supporting economic development, the needs of our members and the community at large, and helping to enrich the lives of residents in Green Valley. This program helps us, together, to meet these goals."

Amazon Smile Program Benefits GVR Foundation

At Amazon Smile, you shop on Amazon like you normally do, and when you make a purchase Amazon will donate 0.5% of that purchase to the charitable organization you choose. This is HUGE!
Amazon is supporting over a million nonprofits, and the GVR Foundation is one of them. The process is easy, just visit smile.amazon.com and shop like normal. You will be asked to support a charity first, and if you type in "GVR Foundation," it will bring our name up.
You will be taking advantage of the same normally low prices that Amazon offers. There is no markup - the donation comes directly from Amazon to our organization. .5% of the price of your eligible Amazon Smile purchases will be donated to the GVR Foundation.
Visit smile.amazon.com and register to support the GVR Foundation!
