Researching New York 2017
This year's Researching NY History Conference, Women of New York: Suffrage and Beyond, takes place November 16th through the 18th at the University at Albany.
The conference meets annually in November, bringing together historians, archivists, public historians, graduate students, museum curators, teachers, documentarians, and more to share their work on New York State history topics.

CDLC Welcomes New Committee Chairs
CDLC is pleased to welcome new chairs to our long standing committees. Colleen Smith, of Albany Law School with be heading up the Regional Automation Advisory Committee (RAAC), and Kimberly Mitchell, of Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences will be leading the Committee on Resource Sharing (CORS).
CDLC is also reconvening its Collection Development Committee (CCD), which will be chaired by Mary Van Ullen of the University at Albany.

Service Spotlight: CaDiLaC
Did you know that CDLC offers a way to search the holdings of all of our member libraries and library systems in one convenient place? This discovery tool is called
CaDiLaC.
CaDiLaC started as a union catalog on CD-ROM in 1990 and by 1994, dial-in access was available. By the turn of the century, CDLC recognized the need to offer the product online and purchased URSA, a SirsiDynix product which was used for another decade. However, with increasing costs and decreasing functionality, CDLC decided it was time for a replacement and in 2010, contracted with Index Data to provide a hosted solution using MasterKey software.
Since then, we have continued to work with IndexData to improve and tweak the system. Most recently, we were able to add a "Staff Request" button to help streamline the process of requesting interlibrary loans with our eForm.

Special Interest Groups Formed
In response to requests for more networking opportunities, CDLC is excited to announce new and returning Interest Groups as forums for members to discuss common interests.
CDLC wants to help our members make local connections. Building these peer communities allows us all to grow, learn, explore, and network. Meetings are open to all staff at CDLC member institutions as well as CDLC's personal members and take place at CDLC unless otherwise noted.

Albany County Historical Association at Ten Broeck Mansion, Creates First NY Heritage Collection

Dongan Charter Parade 1936 Albany New York collection contains pictures from the Dongan Charter Celebration Parade held in Albany, New York on July 22, 1936. The parade was to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the city's charter. The Dongan Charter, granted by Governor Thomas Dongan in 1686, turned the village of Albany (New York) into a city.
New York Heritage Digital Collections is a research portal for students, educators, historians, genealogists, and everyone else interested in the people, places and institutions of historical New York State.
So far, CDLC members have added over 23,000 items to the database.

Change is the Only Constant
The Town of Ballston Community Library has said goodbye to the former Director Karen DeAngelo who has accepted a position as a District Consultant Librarian in Pennsylvania. Rebecca Darling will act as the Interim Director until a new director is hired.
Skidmore's Lucy Scribner Library is also going through some changes as they welcome Jenna Pitera as their new Science Librarian and Michael Paulmeno as their new Systems Librarian.

Cambridge Public Library Participates as Community Change Agent
Cambridge Public Library, part of the Southern Adirondack Library System, has been chosen to participate in the first cohort of Community Change Agents, a NYLA Sustainability Initiative.
Participating libraries will collaborate with local stakeholders to create economically sound, socially just, and environmentally responsible communities. The selected libraries and their community partners will identify and address a community challenge during the course of the program.

UAlbany Receives Grant
The University at Albany's M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives received a DHP Arrangement and Description Grant to create EAD finding aids and MARC records for some of their collections including the Rhonda Fox Graves Papers and the Mildred F. Taylor Papers -two collections that contains material from female politicians active in the mid-20th century. They are also creating records for the National Organization for Women-New York State Chapter Records, an advocacy organization from the late 20th Century.

State Education Department Announces $19 Million in Library Construction Grants
216 public libraries statewide will receive $19 million for construction and renovation projects according to Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. The awards are supported by capital funds appropriated in the FY 2016-2017 State Budget for the construction and renovation of public library and public library system buildings in New York State.
"Libraries across New York State do an excellent job at connecting people with endless opportunities for learning, growth and culture," said Senator Patty Ritchie, Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Libraries.
We're excited to share that $1.5 million of that money will go to fund projects at the following public libraries, members of CDLC members Mohawk Valley Library System, Southern Adirondack Library System, and Upper Hudson Library System:
Albany Public Library, Argyle Free Library, Arvilla E Diver Memorial Library, Bolton Free Library, Brunswick Community Library, The Community Library (Cobleskill), East Greenbush Community Library, Easton Library, Fort Plain Free Library, Gloversville Public Library, Grafton Community Library, Greenwich Free Library, Nassau Free Library, RCS Community Library, Sand Lake Town Library, Schoharie Free Library Association, Southern Adirondack Library System, Stillwater Free Library,Town of Johnsburg Library, Troy Public Library, Upper Hudson Library System, Waterford Public Library, William K. Sanford Town Library.

Listening Up: Podcasts
Podcasts are like serialized radio shows that you can listen to anytime, anywhere as long as you have a listening device. Listen on your laptop while you're doing dishes or cooking dinner or play them on your phone when you're commuting to work, digging in the garden, or waiting at your next appointment. You can either listen to individual episodes by visiting the website or you can subscribe to a podcast and have new episodes download to your device.

Collection Needs Assessment Program Supplies Grant
Deadline: October 1, 2017
A partnership between the New York State Council of the Arts and the Greater Hudson Heritage Network has created a grant to help
chartered nonprofit museums, historical organizations or other cultural institutions purchase supplies.
Applicants who have consulted with an appropriate professional may request funds to purchase collections management supplies. Supplies may include, but are not limited to: storage boxes, acid-free tissue paper, artifact trays, dividers, UV filtering film, Tyvek sheeting, tape, tags, labels, and environmental monitors. Supply requests for archival or library collections will not be supported.

Vernon Library Supplies Offers Generous Grant
Deadline: October 31, 2017
Vernon Library Supplies
is giving away 100% of its 2017 operating profits to libraries and other non-profit organizations with programs designed to help new immigrants achieve English literacy and proficiency.
Grants of up to $5000
will be awarded beginning December 31, 2017.

NYS Discretionary Grant Program for the Conservation and Preservation of Library Research Materials
Deadline: November 3, 2017
The purpose of this grant is to encourage the proper care and accessibility of research materials in the State, to promote the use and development of guidelines and standards for conservation/preservation work, and to support the growth of local and cooperative preservation programs.
The Discretionary Grant Program provides modest financial support for projects that contribute to the preservation of significant research material by
improving collection storage environments, reformatting collections, treating collections, or other preservation activities described in their guidelines.
Types of materials considered eligible for funding include books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, sound records, archives and moving images.
