Start the school year off in this fun after-school class!

Children in grades 1-7 are invited to join the Children's Department's Chess Club instructed by Christopher Potts!

Christopher Potts has taught over four hundred students over sixteen years as a scholastic chess instructor. He has been a tournament player for more than thirty years and has several years experience as a US Chess Federation certified tournament director. Mr. Potts has also served on the board of the Connecticut State Chess Association. In this program, those brand new to chess will learn:

- The history and rules of the game
- Basic checkmate themes and patterns
- Basic strategy and tactics

Advanced students will:
- Review the basics
- Learn more advanced strategy and tactics
- Learn optimal opening and endgame play
- Gain an appreciation for the vital importance of making and carrying out sound plans

Time will be provided for students to play games and put the classroom lessons into practice. The most important lesson is that chess is a pastime that can develop the mind and provide a lifetime of fun!

Program fee is ONLY $80 per student for all eight meetings which partially benefits the Children's Library. For children in grades 1-7. In-person or phone registration is required, payment due at time of registration. 203-762-6336

Plant the Tiny Seed
Miss Shayna recommends Plant the Seed by Christie Matheson

Have you read Hervé Tullet's interactive picture books Mix it Up! and Press Here a million times and want another book that is similar? Plant the Tiny Seed will engage your children by asking them to "clap to bring the sun" and "jiggle the plants to scatter the seeds." This book is not only a fun game for children, but also a good book for beginning readers and a lesson about gardening for all ages. You might just find yourself reading this book over and over!
