NEW ADVICE COLUMN PUTS UWVC SPECIALISTS AT YOUR DISPOSAL
With the release of the Winter 2016-17 issue of On Call, we launched a new column called "Ask a UW Veterinarian." We invite you to send us your animal-related questions; if your submission is chosen, one of our veterinary medical specialists will provide an answer, and both the question and answer will be printed in the next issue of On Call. So go ahead and ask away -- our veterinarians are at your disposal!

GOING OUTSIDE THE BOX
It's a fact: 1 in 4 cats will stop using the litter box at some point in their lives. We bet you are wondering why -- and what you can do about it. Good thing Sandi Sawchuk from our Primary Care Service has the answers. She recently joined Larry Meiller on Wisconsin Public Radio to talk about the many reasons why cats begin avoiding their litter boxes, what to do if your feline companion starts exhibiting this behavior, and steps you can take to prevent it in the first place.

STUDY OF DOGS WITH CANCER
The Medical Oncology Service seeks dogs with new or recurrent mast cell tumors, melanoma, or lymphoma for an evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of a novel antibody therapy. All costs of the antibody and related procedures are fully funded. More.

The Small Animal Surgery Service also seeks dogs with mast cell tumors for a study of the effectiveness of a less invasive tumor sampling method.  More.

Small Animal Blood Bank
During emergencies, many animals require blood transfusions to get them through the trauma and help them recover from their injuries. The in-house blood bank at UW Veterinary Care is vital to this life-saving work, but it can only function through the generosity of dogs like Guenther. A big, gentle German Shepherd owned by Kim Holman, one of our wonderful reception staff at the Morrie Waud Large Animal Hospital, Guenther recently retired after a long run as a donor. Fortunately, giving seems to run in the family. Guenther's nephew, Norbert, is now following in his paw-steps. Your animal can be a livesaver too. Learn how.
