Message From the Chair
Presidents_Message
As the Play Local Golf Tournament has come and gone, I would like to sincerely thank our members and the Dufferin business community for their involvement in this year's tournament. Whether through donating items, coming out to golf, joining us for dinner, or participating in the silent auction, everyone had a hand in making the event possible. Special thanks to our incredible golf committee for all their hard work. Together we raised an impressive amount of money for the Headwaters Health Care Foundation. Stay tuned for the announcement of the grand total in September.

Our advocacy work with regards to Bill 148 is still ongoing and I encourage you to continue to get involved through submitting your business stories and comments to us, as well as by sending letters to the Provincial Government through the Keep Ontario Working Coalition. We will continue to provide updates and information regarding the Bill.

I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable remainder of summer.

Pete Renshaw, Chair

Bill 148 - Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act
T he Government of Ontario announced sweeping changes to Ontario's employment and labour laws. The Dufferin Board of Trade and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce have been vocal opponents of many of the reforms maintaining that they tip the economic balance in a profoundly negative way.

2017 Play Local Golf Tournament

Dufferin Board of Trade Chair, Pete Renshaw, presents the golf trophy to the 2017 Low Gross Champions
August 24, 2017 the Dufferin Board of Trade (DBOT) hosted  the 2017 Play Local Golf Tournament at the Shelburne Golf & Country Club. This year's Low Gross Champion title was awarded to the team of Phil, Andrew, Mark and Ryan with an impressive score of 61.

The annual golf tournament, one of DBOT's four marquee networking events, saw the business community come together for a round of golf, dinner in the clubhouse, and a silent auction benefitting the Headwaters Health Care Foundation. The grand total amount raised for the Foundation will be announced following the cheque presentation in September.

Golfers at the tournament enjoyed many opportunities to win prizes, with local businesses sponsoring various games and activities throughout the course. The event was made possible through the generosity and contribution of the business community. The 2017 Golf committee of Sam Young (Chair), Chris Knechtel, Karen Armstrong, Matthew McClure, Tisha Saunders, Diana Morris, and Nick Lumia, ensured a full day of fun and excitement and worked to bring the community together for a truly memorable event.

The Dufferin Board of Trade extends its sincerest thanks to the 2017 sponsors, auction item donors, golfers, dinner guests, and Golf Committee.

Provincial
Ontario Needs More Resilient Infrastructure to Confront Challenges of 21st Century

The Dufferin Board of Trade in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC), released Building Better: Setting the 2017 Ontario Infrastructure Plan up for success, a report calling on the Ontario Government to implement key recommendations in its imminent Long-Term Infrastructure Plan (LTIP) that will help ensure accountable planning and building resilient, adaptable infrastructure for the future.

With relatively stagnant infrastructure investment since the 1970s, the province of Ontario currently faces a significant infrastructure gap, where it would need an estimated $19 billion to improve current infrastructure alone.  The gap exists because governments have not invested in upholding original infrastructure and Ontario's harsher climate has contributed to the deterioration of the province's infrastructure.

This brief from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce examines what is driving the government's most radical tax overhaul in 50 years.

The government has just proposed the most radical tax overhaul in 50 years. We're particularly worried about the impact on business from (1) a new tax on investment income in a corporation and (2) tough new rules for compensation in family businesses. Why is the government doing this?

The Minister says it's all about "fairness," and his consultation document compares the tax treatment of a business owner with that of an employee to point out corporations have "unfair" advantages. But, the comparison makes no sense-there are good public policy reasons for why owners are taxed differently.

- Hendrik Brakel Senior Director, Economic, Financial & Tax Policy, Canadian Chamber of Commerce
