Dear ,

Are your ready to go? Are you ready for another fantastic year of Scouting? 2017 is going to be awesome!!!

Read through to find out what is coming up in the next few months as well as what has been happening the last couple of months. There are a few important deadlines coming up that you will not want to miss.
Roundtable: Start the New Year Right!

Thursday, January 5, is the next roundtable. The Cub Scout and Boy Scout sessions start at 7:30. Come and bring new leaders and parents to learn and be better informed about what is going on around the council.

NEW in 2017:
Venturing Crew Roundtable Rally
Starting this February 2 at the same time as the Cub Scout and Boy Scout roundtables, we invite all current Venturers within our Marin Council to come together from 7:30-8:30 p.m. This will be the first assembly (and offered quarterly). Crew officers, members, and interested youth between the age of 14 and 20 are all welcome. Get informed, learn and strengthen our Marin Council Venturing Crews. We hope to see you! For more information, email Monika Kainz.

Roundtable is the first Thursday of every month--starting in September and ending in June. They are held at the LDS Church, 220 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael.
Recognize Outstanding
Scouts and Leaders

Every year, the Marin Council gives everyone in the council the opportunity to nominate Scouts and adults as their Scouts/Explorers/Volunteers of the Year. Please take the time soon to nominate them.

The youth (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers) should be recognized by your unit and they will all be in the running to become the Marin Council Scout of the Year. The nominations are due by the end of the day on January 6. All of the nominees will be recognized at the Marin Council Recognition Dinner on March 13 in San Rafael.

Adults can also be nominated as your Volunteer of the Year. Choose one adult from your unit, recognize them within your unit, and allow us to recognize them as well.

You can find the forms and information on our web site or by clicking this link. Don't wait until it's too late!
Code Red
First Aid Meet--January 28

Have you ever wanted to prove your worth in the field of first aid or perhaps wanted to be an actor in first aid scenarios, testing other Scouts on their abilities?

Code Red is a Marin Council first aid competition where troops from all over the county come together to compete. This year, Troop 73 is the host troop, but all units are invited to staff scenarios!

The goal of the patrol is to compete, showing off their first aid skills and saving lives. It is highly recommended that all first- and second-year Scouts participate in a patrol. It is incredibly fun
and is great for learning and cementing skills. Lunch at the event is only provided for staff, so if you are competing, you must bring your own lunch.

If you have been around for a while, please consider staffing a scenario. You'll be working a bit harder, but it is highly enjoyable, and you are helping tons of new Scouts learn! Plus, it's free, and lunch is provided for those who staff.

Code Red is coming up fast (January 28), so register now online! Participation is limited to 1 or 2 patrols per troop of no more than 10 each. Register soon because there is only room for 14 patrols to compete. The First Aid Meet is held at the LDS Church, 220 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael.

Eagle Scout College Scholarship

Do you know a Marin Council Eagle Scout who will be starting college in the fall of 2017? If so we are pleased to announce that the Marin Council, BSA, is offering a $2,500 scholarship that is available only to Marin Council Eagle Scouts to help support their first year of college. This scholarship is funded through donations by Eagle alumni to the Marin Council.

We would encourage all young men who qualify to submit an application for this scholarship, which can be found on our council web site. The deadline for submission is January 31, 2017. This scholarship is only available to Eagle Scouts from Marin Council who earned their Eagle prior to January 31, 2017. Scholarship applications will be reviewed by a panel of Eagle Scout alumni, and our recipient will be notified by late March of the committee's decision.

We are grateful that the generous donations of so many of our Eagle Scout alumni have provided our council the opportunity to offer this scholarship. If you are an adult Eagle Scout and would like to learn more about the Marin Council Eagle Scout Alumni Association, please email Michael Dybeck.

Cyber Chip

With the turn of the calendar and the implementation of updated 2016 requirements, it's time to seriously look at the new Cyber Chip requirements if you haven't already. This program is like the Totin' Chip and Wittlin' Chip, but has to do with internet use and safety. The requirements vary by age and can be found by clicking this link. Below is one example from a Marin troop of how they implemented a group discussion.

The troop combined a group of middle school and high school Scouts, so the Scout in charge decided to select videos from this source that could be used across both grade levels. Cub Scout dens can follow the same procedure, although den leaders should agree on the pack policy regarding electronic devices so everyone is on the same page.

They gathered all troop members to watched the video Friend or Fake that the 6-8th graders needed to watch and two other videos from the 9-12th-grade video list. Then they divided everyone into groups of four for the EDGE (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable) lessons, giving each group four teaching activities picked from this source of materials. They took turns teaching one lesson each. The Scout in charge brought props for the activities that required them.

Everyone presented the contracts, which they made with their parents on their own time. They recited the Cyber Chip oath and discussed as a group appropriate use of electronic devices at meetings and other Scouting events.

This worked for both grade groups, but the Scouts in grades 9-12 also had to discuss with their parents the benefits and potential dangers teenagers might experience when using social media.

The entire lesson took a bit longer than an hour, and troop guides attended so they could learn to walk smaller groups of Scouts through the process.

If you have any questions on how to implement this program in your unit, please contact Nancy Rozell.

Scouts on the Move

Webelos Scout Service Project

Much attention is given to Eagle Scout projects. However, here is a project shouldered by a second-year Webelos. Logan Parker is a nine-year-old Webelos 2 in Pack 85, Novato. He started his own community service project "My Project for Foster Kids." Logan describes how he got the idea for the project.

"There are a lot of foster kids who need help. I see them come into the Marin Foster Care Association resource center every week just wishing they could find some socks or a backpack. Sometimes, a foster mom needs diapers for a baby they just got who has nothing. I've been volunteering for a year and a half now, and it makes me want to try and do more to help."

Over the last month, with the support of the friends and families of Novato Pack 85 (pictured on left), Logan collected nearly $1500 worth of gift cards, clothing, toys, and diaper donations for the Marin Foster Care Association.

Veterans Day at the Redwoods in Mill Valley

Members of Pack 1 and Troop 1 helped serve and sang songs to veterans at the Redwoods Senior home on Veterans' Day in November.

Brandon Trott, Adam Gurrola, and Jason Gurrola, Cub Scouts from Pack 85, Novato, took part in the Veteran's Day activities at the Marin Civic Center. Here they are reciting the pledge of allegiance.

Marin County Parks Service Projects

Looking for fun, team building service projects? The Marin County Parks is always looking for volunteers of all ages! Their naturalists and rangers have events throughout the year with topics that coincide with Scout requirements. See their web site. Please note that the calendar is updated quarterly, so check back from time to time for updates and new events.

Here is a picture of Pack 186 and Troop 73 doing a MCP service project recently.

If you have photos and a story of recent service projects or activities in your unit that you want people to know about, send your written article with photos or art with us.
Donate Your Vehicle

If you have a vehicle you no longer need or use, consider donating it to the Marin Council. There are two ways to do this:

1) If it is in good running condition, we can probably use it. We have need for vehicles, especially high-occupancy vehicles or trucks. If it needs major repair, then please look at option #2 below. We do not have the resources to repair it.

If you have a vehicle that is in decent condition, then please contact Michael Dybeck or Tim Wells.

2) If your vehicle is in poorer condition, then consider giving it through our vehicle donation service (VDAC). They will sell it, and send part of the proceeds to us. It's a great way to get rid of that old vehicle and help the Scouts as well. They will haul it away for you. This is pretty much any kind of vehicle, including boats.

If you have a vehicle that can be donated in this way, click on the logo here on the right.

Thank you!!!
