SAMHSA launches the redesign of the Learning Center for the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has relaunched their Learning Center for the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).  The Learning Center has been redesigned to provide extensive resources for developing, implementing, and sustaining culture-centered and evidence-based programs and practices. The learning center connects providers with resources to help improve behavioral health in the community. These resources are organized around five themes: emerging evidence in culture-centered practices, evidence-based programs and practices, implementation, sustainment, and topics in behavioral health.

National Institute of Health releases the COPD National Action Plan

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is the third leading cause of death in the United States, affecting 16 million Americans and millions more who do not know they have it. COPD can stifle a person's ability to breathe, lead to long-term disability, and dramatically affect his or her quality of life.
The COPD National Action Plan is the first-ever blueprint for a multi-faceted, unified fight against the disease. Developed at the request of Congress with input from the broad COPD community, it provides a comprehensive framework for action by those affected by the disease and those who care about reducing its burden.

Governor Hogan appoints Dr. Allan Anderson to serve as CHRC Chairman

Dr. Allan Anderson was appointed earlier this summer by Governor Hogan as the new Chairman of the CHRC.  Dr. Anderson, a resident of Dorchester County, has been a CHRC Commissioner since April 2016.  In addition to serving on the CHRC, Dr. Anderson is the Medical Director of the Samuel and Alexia Bratton Memory Clinic in Easton.  Dr. Anderson also serves as a Delegate to the American Medical Association House of Delegates and is active in the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP), a national organization representing geriatric psychiatrists and other clinicians, educators and researchers in the field of geriatric mental health.  Dr. Anderson received the AAGP Clinician of the Year award in 2014 and in 2011 and 2012 served as President of the AAGP.  Dr. Anderson currently serves as Part-Time Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University.   Dr. Anderson is very excited about the work of the Commission and how many grants have supported programs of primary and secondary prevention and commented, "As a medical student I was very interested in preventive medicine. While medicine has long focused on treating disease, more models of care are now evolving practices that support keeping people healthy and avoiding disease states. I believe our Commission will continue to award innovative grants that center around health and wellness for the citizens of Maryland."

Erica I. Shelton, MD and Scott T. Gibson appointed as new Commissioners to CHRC

The CHRC welcomes the addition of two new Commissioners, Dr. Erica I. Shelton from Baltimore City and Mr. Scott Gibson from Annapolis, who were appointed by Governor Hogan last month. Dr. Shelton is an emergency medicine physician at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine, where she also serves as an Assistant Professor.  Dr. Shelton has been published in numerous journals, and her work in emergency medicine focuses on increasing patient and community engagement in the health care system and expanding access for vulnerable populations.  Mr. Gibson is the Vice President for Human Resources at Melwood Horticultural Training Center, Inc., a dynamic nonprofit that creates jobs and opportunities to improve the lives of people with disabilities and serves more than 1,900 people in the greater Washington, DC area.  In addition, Mr. Gibson is a visiting lecturer at Mount Saint Mary's University and has taught courses in American Government at the Harford Community College.

Annual meeting of Community Behavioral Health Association highlights data warehouse project

The Community Behavioral Health Association of Maryland (CBH) held its annual meeting earlier this summer. The Association is the leading advocacy organization for 53 of Maryland's community-based mental health and addiction treatment providers statewide. The meeting, which focused on preparing for value-based payment, highlighted a new data warehouse project, which is supported by a grant from the CHRC. The warehouse will assist CBH's members in preparing for value-based care and will aggregate existing data sources to develop a nearer-to-complete picture of capacity, community and hospital utilization, and cost and value of community-based behavioral health services. The meeting was attended by CHRC Commissioner Ivy Simmons, shown in the picture below with CBH Executive Director Shannon Hall.

Baltimore City Health Department celebrates the start of the SNAP 7 Healthy Stores program

The Baltimore City Health Department celebrated the expansion of its Baltimarket program at an event in July hosted by Shop & Go, a corner store participating in the program that works to expand access to affordable fresh food options.  The event generated coverage by WJZ and in the Baltimore Sun.  The program is supported by a two-year grant from the CHRC, which will be utilized to recruit 40 additional stores in the program.  The program also utilizes Neighborhood Food Advocates to promote adoption of healthy lifestyles and supports job opportunities for Baltimore youth.  Baltimore City Health Officer Dr. Leanna S. Wen and CHRC Commissioner Surina Jordan spoke at the event.

The Commission has awarded 12 grants totaling $2.1 million to reduce obesity and increase food security.  These grants have supported programs in rural, urban, and suburban communities.  For more information about CHRC's obesity and food security grants, click here.
