Sermon in Song: A Musical Shabbat
Friday, January 6, 7:00 pm

Now that you've had your fill of Hanukkah latkes, spun your last dreidel and clinked your last toast to the New Year, what's left to celebrate? Why Shabbat, of course!  Come and celebrate the first Shabbat of 2017 with a special musical service featuring Vinyl Download (aka the TBI "house band"), members of Zemer Sweenie's Adult guitar class, and a Sermon in Song of inspirational music sung by our Adult and Youth Choirs. Thanks to all our wonderful and gifted music volunteers, it promises to be a joyous and memorable evening you won't want to miss!

First Shabbat Mussar & Minyan
Saturday, January 7, 9:00 am & 10:15 am

On the first Saturday of every month a lively group gathers  to discuss Jewish perspectives on mindful living, called  "mussar" (moo-sahr). This month the topic is "hatred," with  conversation facilitated by Ann Louise Olson. We serve  coffee with caffeine, and welcome everyone interested in  how anger is seen in Jewish tradition.

Following the mussar discussion, our monthly Shabbat  morning minyan will be led by Zemer Sweenie in the chapel.  "Minyan" simply refers to the ten Jews that customarily  make up a prayer quorum. Our monthly minyan is a quiet,  sweet service where we encourage participation.  Attend both the mussar class and the prayer minyan,  or come for just one or the other. Either way, you are  welcome to our first Shabbat of the month community.
Sha'arei Shabbat
Friday, January 13
6:30 Service;  7:30 Dinner

The world of today is busy and often frantic. Schedules overwhelm us; our electronic devices run 24/7. We seem to be ruled by outside forces, so that "the sky" and an appreciation of life's broader purpose pass us by daily. Our lives are often consumed in activity without any feeling for the joy of the moment.

Shabbat is the vehicle by which Judaism addresses this dilemma. It is a time for stepping back from the busyness of life to gain perspective on its' meaning. Shabbat is an opportunity for "time out" from the pressures of the workweek. It allows us to make time for those people
and experiences that matter to us most.

Experience the joy of Shabbat with your family and friends! Enjoy a delicious dinner of a crisp salad, Turkey meatloaf, scalloped potatoes and roasted vegetables.

RSVP HERE by January 11, 2017, at 6:00 pm for the EARLY BIRD price of $8.00 for adults, and free for kids under 13; after the deadline, the price for dinner is $12.00.

Harmony Creates Harmony:  A Musical  Journey of Hope -  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dinner and Commemorative Program at the Temple
Sunday, January 15, 6:00 pm

Now in its 29th year, Temple B'nai Israel will once again host this annual event to bring communities around OKC together to affirm Dr. King's wide-ranging vision of freedom, equality and justice for all. Join us for a light supper at 6:00 pm, followed by an inspirational program of readings presented by youth and community leaders, and music by OKC area choirs and musicians, including our own Adult and Youth Choirs.

"Peace for Israel means security, and we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity. I see Israel as one of the great outposts of democracy in the world, and a marvelous example of what can be done, how desert land can be transformed into an oasis of brotherhood and democracy. Peace for Israel means security and that security
must be a reality."

"When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews, you are talking anti-Semitism"

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Women's Self Defense Course
Temple B'nai Israel
Empowerment!   Knowledge!   Self-Confidence!

Self defense and self protection are an important priority for women. The most common crime to happen to a woman is rape. Assault on women is also a common crime because assailants assume women will be more passive and will not fight back; this has to do with stereotypes of women. The best way for women to fight back against crime is to prevent it from happening by avoiding being alone or being in badly lit areas. However, getting into such situations is sometimes unavoidable.

In light of these facts, Temple B'nai Israel is offering a Women's Self Defense course. Each session builds on the previous week's, but if you cannot make all four, participation is still encouraged. S tudents must be at least 13 years old-no maximum age. It's o pen to non - Temple members too, - so tell a friend!

The course is $160 for all four sessions, or $80 to attend just sessions 1 & 2. A mouth guard & notebook will be provided and  full scholarship is available for Temple girls ages 13-18 accompanied by a paying adult Temple member. (This special offer is NOT available to non - Temple members). Instruction provided by American Okinawan Karate Academy LLC, Veronica Sandubrae (First Degree Black Belt)

The sessions will take place on:
Sunday Jan 29, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Sunday Feb 12, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
Sunday Feb 19, 2:00 - 5:00 pm
Sunday Feb 26 , 1:30 - 4:00 pm

Rosh Hodesh Conversations

"Rosh Hodesh" is the beginning of the new Hebrew month, when there is a new moon in the sky. The new Hebrew month of Sh'vat begins at sundown on Friday, January 27.
Family History...The Stories Behind The Names
Sunday, January 29, 10:00 am
TBI Library

Why do people delve into their genealogy and family tree? It's about a desire to feel connected - finding out who our ancestors were, where they came from, and what led them to their final destinations all around the globe. When we research our family tree, we discover the divergent paths that our ancestors took to find freedom and opportunity.

"Jewish genealogy fosters Jewish continuity - preserving the memories of our ancestors and their lives, passing information about their heritage on to our children and their children from generation to generation". (Generation to Generation by Arthur Kurzweil)

If you are interested in researching your family tree or have expertise to share with those of us who are just starting this process, please join Marcy Price for a discussion and sharing of useful online resources and strategies for creating your own family tree.
