"You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance."

From Mrs. Rowley  new_years_fireworks.jpg

A very Happy New Year to all of you, and prayers for you all in 2017. It is so wonderful to welcome our students and staff back, and to see so many eager faces! While we settle back into our routine, we anticipate Catholic Schools Week at the end of January. This is a week when we celebrate our mission as a Catholic School, and we will have several events that week. We will begin with an open house on Sunday, January 29 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Please spread the word about our wonderful school and invite family and friends to join us!
With the possibility of some messy weather on Friday morning, I just want to remind you that we follow Fairfax County Public Schools with regard to delays and closings. If Fairfax County is closed, so are we. If they have a two hour delay we will open at 10:00 am (Extended Day at 9:00 am).

Remember us, O God;
from age to age be our comforter.
You have given us the wonder of time,
blessings in days and nights, seasons and years.
Bless your children at the turning of the year
and fill the months ahead with the bright hope
that is ours in the coming of Christ.
You are our God, living and reigning, forever and ever.
Amen.

Club Updates
Updates from STEM Club

Happy New Year! Here's a look at what STEM Club did before we went on Christmas break:

K-1: We took a page from Montessori geo boards and devised our own STEM Christmas trees! The kids had a selection of washers (flat, split washers and tooth washers), varying sized screws and rubber bands. They used their imagination and came up with some great looking trees!

K-1 and 2-4th: We did a quick experiment with candy canes. We had three beakers: one with tap water, one with white vinegar and one with salt water. What would happen when we submerged a candy cane in them? Regardless of grade, the hypotheses were similar; surely the vinegar would dissolve the candy first. The kids were all surprised with the result- the candy canes dissolved in the tap water first!

2-4th: We were long overdue for an engineering challenge, so we had one this week. Santa's sleigh was broken down and our STEM engineers had to devise a parachute for Santa such that he and his presents could make it down to the ground safely.
Well, talk about the Engineering Design Process in action! We came up with ideas, designed, built, tested and redesigned. The kids had a blast. They had a variety of materials to work with: coffee filters, pieces of wrapping paper, napkins, string, pipe cleaners, paper cups and even tiny wrapped gift card presents. The pictures say it all! Well done!

5-8th: We worked on electricity and electronics with a Christmas theme by incorporating some different materials: aluminum foil, Christmas lights and batteries. Could we make a parallel circuit or a series circuit with this? We sure could.
We then moved onto something even more fun: using LEDs to make a star ornament, with, you guessed it, aluminum foil, paperclips and a coin battery. In both the Christmas light circuits and the LED ornament, our aluminum foil acted as our electricity conductor. The current was passed from the battery, through the paper clip, to the aluminum foil and finally to the legs of the LEDs. Cool stuff!
