Letter from the Artistic Director

Happy New Year!

Time to feed the uneaten Christmas cookies to the birds, take the ribbon away from the cat, set aside the lamest presents you've received for regifting, and make those resolutions. Maybe this year...

We at the Rep have resolved (cue awkward segue) to fill the 2017 calendar with entertainment. We have comedy, we have drama, do you even need to ask if we have musical? Also days and nights of improvisation, classes for children and adults, readings of brand new plays by local authors, and so much more. We even moved up the announcement of our crackerjack 2017-2018 season so that you can make your theatre plans now. (Remember that season ticket holders get priority seating.)

For more details, scroll down, or check out the reader-friendly links on our home page - at toledorep.org - where you can learn virtually everything you ever wanted to know about our theatre. And if virtual isn't your thing, we promise we'll take your call (unlike your weird cousin Roger) at 419-243-9277.

Finally, if there's something you'd like to see produced on our stage or offered as a class or brought to your venue, we're open to suggestions.

We're resolved to make 2017 just that much better.

See you at the theatre,

Announcing Our  85th Season
2017-2018

Bonnie & Clyde
by Ivan Manchell, Frank Wildhorn, & Don Black
September 8, 9, 15, 16, 17, 21, 22, 23 & 24, 2017

A thrilling and sexy musical chronicling the lives of the infamous Depression-era duo. America's most notorious lovers and bank robbers take the country by storm, their forbidden story told with a score combining blues, gospel and rockabilly music. A wonderful new show with a large ensemble cast and multiple Tony nominations, never before produced in Northwestern Ohio.

It Came From Mars
by Joe Zettelmaier
October 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27, 28 & 29, 2017

Farlowe's Mystery Theatre Hour is in rehearsal for its weekly radio show when an alarming announcement comes over the radio - Martians have landed! The actors fly into hysterics, barricading themselves in the studio, not expecting to live to see the next day. Passions ignite, secret identities are revealed and slapstick mayhem ensues when a washed-up director, his drama queen ex, a wannabe war hero, a ditzy actress, and a German sound effects wiz all think they are about to be annihilated by men from Mars. Winner of the Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award, and nominee for the Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association Award!

Human Error
by Eric Pfeffinger
(Special Event)
November 17, 18 (two shows) & 19, 2017

A contemporary comedy set right here in Toledo and written by a local playwright in which, through a medical mix-up, two couples (one red statish, the other blue) meet and have a kind of cultural exchange, learning a lot and reminding themselves, and the audience, that while much divides us, there is also a large territory of common ground. Full of warmth, heart, and outrageous humor. And there's a scene at Cabela's. Winner of an Ohio Arts Council award for Individual Excellence.

A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens, revised by David Jex and Debra Ross Calabrese
December 1, 2 & 3, 2017

A Toledo Rep tradition for more than 30 years, this timeless tale of redemption follows Ebenezer Scrooge as he is transformed by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future from a miserly old curmudgeon into a man who embodies the true meaning of Christmas. With lavish costumes, spectacular sets and a musical score rich with carols of the era, this production is one you will not want to miss!

Ripcord
by David Lindsay-Abaire
January 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 & 28. 2018

A sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when the cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.

Photograph 51
by Anna Ziegler
March 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 & 25, 2018

A humorous and moving portrait of Rosalind Franklin, one of the great female scientists of the twentieth century, and her fervid drive to map the contours of the DNA molecule. A pack of chemists and biologists relive the chase, revealing the unsung achievements of this trail-blazing, fiercely independent woman. A fascinating play about science, ambition, isolation, the unique challenges of a woman working in a man's world, and the race for greatness.

Sweet Charity
by Neil Simon, Cy Coleman, & Dorothy Fields
June 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 & 17, 2018

Have you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly that she tried too hard to get it? Meet Sweet Charity, who sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances. Her world is the all too real world of Times Square, and the people who pass through are as deceptively charming a group as ever swept across any stage. With a book by the king of comedy Neil Simon and wonderful musical numbers including 'Big Spender', 'If My Friends Could See Me Now', and 'I'm a Brass Band'.

SEASON BONUS!

Rainbow Series
(three staged readings of classic gay plays)

The Normal Heart
by Larry Kramer
April 6 & 7, 2018

Kramer's explosive 1985 autobiographical play chronicles the early years of the AIDS epidemic in New York, and the founding of the advocacy group, Gay Men's Health Crisis. Basis of an Emmy-winning 2014 HBO film.

The Children's Hour
by Lillian Hellman
April 13 & 14, 2018

Hellman's trailblazing 1934 drama is set in an all-girls boarding school run by best friends Karen and Martha. A vindictive student starts a rumor that the two women are lovers. As local tongues wag, the truth becomes murkier.

The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told
by Paul Rudnick
April 20 & 21, 2018

Rudnick's audacious 1998 comedy tells the story of Adam and Steve, as well as Jane and Mabel (the first Lesbians) from the Old Testament to modern-day Manhattan. A no-holds-barred comedy that skewers both religious hypocrisy and political correctness.

There will be a combined level Improv Showcase on the evening of Monday, February 27th at 7pm at the Toledo Rep.

Registration for all levels of Improv is $125.00

Further details about instructors and classes:

Level 1 - Instructor Erin Kanary

Level 1 introduces students to the principles of improvisation. Learn improv in a pressure-free environment! No prior experience necessary! Through exercises and performance games, students will focus on short-form improvisation ('Whose Line is it Anyway?'). Upon completing Level 1, you will have learned the fundamentals of improv, while gaining the building blocks of long-form improvisation.

Erin Kanary is a graduate of The Second City Chicago's Improv and Comedy Writing programs. She has also studied comedy writing in Chicago at iO (formerly Improv Olympic) and long form improv at Planet Ant Theatre in Detroit. Erin was a featured writer/performer at Chicago's Sketchfest 2014 and The Second City's Best of the Box 2014. Erin is currently a house ensemble member at ComedySportz Detroit and performs improv in the back of many poorly-lit bars in Detroit.

Level 2 - Instructor Martin Verni

Level 2 says 'yes, and...' to Level 1 and continues to reinforce and build upon the foundations established in Level 1. This class will focus heavily on object work, environment and emotions and introduce the class to the principles of long-form improvisation. The class will learn to string two-person and group scenes together in a montage centered around a single suggestion and theme.

Martin Verni  has taught and performed improvisation for over a decade in both New York City and Chicago. He began at Second City's NYTC and has performed at the Upright Citizen's Brigade and Gotham City Improv. Upon moving to Chicago, he continued his training at iO (formerly Improv Olympic) and performed with Cowlick at The Playground Theater. Martin is proud to have shared the stage with such emerging comedic luminaries as Lauren Lapkus, Lennon Parham and Leslie Meisel. In addition to improvisation, Martin has performed in numerous plays, was a background performer for Saturday Night Live and appeared as an Eminem look-a-like for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.

Level 3 - Instructor Nick Morgan

Level 3 continues to reinforce and build upon the foundations established in Level 2. This class will continue to build on scenes, group scenes and long form concepts. It will continue to focus on object work, environment and emotions and working on single suggested themes.

Nick Morgan trained in improv at The Second City Theater in Chicago, IL and iO (formerly Improv Olympic). He graduated the Conservatory program at The Second City, whose notable alumni include Dan Aykroyd, Joan Rivers, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, John Candy, Eugene Levy, Mike Myers, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey. Nick performed improv at The Playground Theater, with longtime house team 'Wing Night' and wrote and performed his original show 'Karl Lighter's Hour of Power' at The Second City's Skybox Theater. Nick is a former Board member here at the Rep and is fortunate enough to have performed in two productions on the 10th Street stage.

* Level 2 Improv and Level 3 Improv are only open to those with previous improv experience *

Our program includes classes, workshops and camps for children, teens and adults.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS APPLICATION FORM

The Toledo Rep is looking for new Board and Committee members. "Improv is live theater with scenes, games, or stories spontaneously created onstage by two or more performers, often in response to audience suggestions".

"I love directing and teaching because they go hand in hand. A good director is like a teacher because she or he does research, plans rehearsal, manages the diverse personalities and talents of the cast, tests the performers, pushes everyone (including myself) to do his or her best".
