President's Message

The Real Definition(s) of a "Parking Problem"

December has now passed, and with it the crowds of shoppers out finding just the right gifts for their friends and loved ones.  For those of you in the retail trades, it's such an important part of your year, and I hope you had a wonderful (and profitable!) 2016 season.

The flip side of this time of year is that there are a lot more people out - and therefore - a lot more people parking in our shopping districts.  I was reminded of this myself when I went to my "secret" parking area at Paseo Nuevo a few weeks ago (OK, not really secret, just the basement area by the Macy's entrance), and it was completely full.  As I groused under my breath about not being able to find a spot, I had to catch myself.  I was complaining for all the wrong reasons.

Short Term Rentals
Supervisors Delay Vote on Short Term Rentals

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors today voted 4 - 1 to have staff bring additional information to a future meeting before any action is taken on the proposed ban on Short Term Rentals in unincorporated parts of the County.  The vote, with only Supervisor Wolf in opposition, was in line with the Chamber's position against the proposed ban.

"In conjunction with our partners at Hospitality Santa Barbara, the Chamber asked the Supervisors not to approve this ban," said Chamber President/CEO Ken Oplinger.  "We believe the County's rather draconian step of an outright ban is against the interests of the community, and that a regulatory system that addresses the concerns of neighbors and contains strict enforcement measures is a better way to go."

Chamber staff will continue to work on this issue as the Board receives additional information from County.  For more information, or to find out how to get involved, contact Ken Oplinger at the Chamber, 965-3023.

Non-Profit of the Month

Since 1970, CEC has led the Santa Barbara region - and at times California and the nation - in creative solutions to some of the toughest environmental problems. We are often referred to as a "think-and-do tank" - deeply analyzing a problem and then applying creative, real-world solutions to it.

CEC's process for creating social change is:
  1. Identify a critical community need,
  2. Raise awareness about that need (often by setting a challenge goal for the community),
  3. Push state and local government to change laws and regulations that affect the issue,
  4. Take direct action ourselves toward that need, and
  5. Spur the community to adopt new behaviors.
CEC seeks to move the Santa Barbara region away from dependence on fossil fuels in one generation - Fossil Free by '33. We are aggressively pursuing this goal by educating and activating the community around sustainable practices, advocating for environmentally-sound policies and laws, and building partnerships with other organizations to open new pathways for sustainable transportation, energy, and food systems. Our five initiatives - Drive Less, Drive Clean, Go Solar, Ditch Plastic, Eat Local - offer accessible pathways for the community to connect with and take action on CEC's vision for a cleaner, healthier future.

We invite you to join our movement to create a healthy, prosperous and green Central Coast. For more information please visit us at http://www.cecsb.org/

Imagine X is beginning its 4th year serving Santa Barbara and surrounding communities. Imagine X has experienced exceptional growth since opening its doors in 2013, now having 2 additional doctors and a staff of 11. The team at Imagine X has won several awards, including being nominated for Small Business of the Year for 2016 by the Chamber of the Santa Barbara Region... And they don't plan on slowing down any time soon. Mallory says, "There is such a huge need for what we do in the Santa Barbara area. Right now there are not a lot of options for people who have these conditions and prefer not to take medication or deal with the pain and symptoms for the rest of their lives. We offer them a better solution."

Dr. Adam and Mallory also welcomed their first child in May 2016. A baby boy, Branson Xander Harcourt. Mallory and her family will be celebrating her 30th birthday this weekend.
