PENTATHLETE CORNER - GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP

Good Sportsmanship and Character Development is a top priority of the Math Pentathlon Program.  For each Division Level the first Rule of our Common Rules in our Highlights is the Pentathlete Code of Conduct.  This Code clearly states that a Pentathlete is to treat adults and fellow Pentathletes with courtesy and respect.  In accordance with this we have Pentathletes at National Math Pentathlon Academic Tournaments respectfully begin each game with a handshake wishing their opponent good luck.  At the end of each game we ask our Game Monitors to make sure that Pentathletes again shake hands with their opponent indicating a respectful spirit of thankfulness for each Pentathlete doing their best.  This is done regardless of the outcome, win, tie, or loss.

Repeatedly we hear from parents, teachers and MP Coaches that the Math Pentathlon is an excellent program to foster Character Development and that the National Tournament feature of this program offers so many opportunities for growth and positive life lessons to be learned.
In preparation for tournament  all of us at the Pentathlon Institute encourage you to teach your students how to both win and lose with dignity.  With both club and classroom use   we suggest that students shake hands both before and after each game as we do at the Math Pentathlon Tournaments.  While learning the games highlight the importance of Teamwork.  This spirit is seen so many times throughout tournament season when Pentathletes who did not receive medals, still enthusiastically applauded the efforts of their school team members that did.  Use every opportunity to encourage students to demonstrate kindness wherever they can and show empathy when fellow students lose a game.  Foster the spirit that a loss can be a good thing when we learn from this experience.  After losing a game, ask students what they learned.  Once students can lose gracefully and win respectfully they gain self-esteem as well as the virtues of patience, cooperation, and integrity.  Make positive use of our tournament challenge system with first, second, and third opinions to teach them how to be respectful with adults and ones peers, while at the same time learning how to stand up for oneself.

MEGA GAMES - Check Out Our NEW SERIES of GAMES

The Pentathlon Institute introduces MEGA which stands for Mathematics-Experience Games Approach.  This series of strategy games is designed to conceptually address specific mathematics content that needs more applications and attention in the math curriculum.  These highly motivational and engaging games focus on math concepts that tend to be misunderstood since they are not conceptually well-grounded.

The first of these games to be unveiled is Relative to What? This game makes use of pattern blocks and fraction strips to develop the concept that a fraction is relative to what constitutes the whole.  Using 2 Full-Color captivating Gameboards students actively explore many related math concepts such as multiples, equivalence, addition and subtraction of fraction values, and ratio and proportion.  Working in groups of 4 and teams of 2, students must balance both strategy and chance in a race to fill their boards with geometric shapes while they continuously reconstruct fractions that are relative to whatever constitutes the whole.

CALLING ALL COACHES
When parents register their child online they MUST choose a game to monitor.   This way all parents are aware of the need for volunteers and will know that they need to be present to help in some way.  After registering online parents will email their child's ticket to their coach so the coach can verify registration and make note of the game they signed up to Game Monitor.  Once the coach has all registrations the coach will verify Game Monitor assignments and send any corrections (game assignment changes or parents not monitoring) to the Center Director.  ONLY THE COACH can give a child's parent a pass on Game Monitoring.  More Game Monitor info including requirements can be found HERE.

2017 TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS

The National Mathematics Pentathlon Academic Tournament Highlights are  one-page summaries of each game's most critical rules.  Each Highlight Sheet is divided into 3 sections:  Basics, e.g. Goal, Start, Game Time Limit; Game Specific Rules; and Challenges.  Each year any updates/changes in MP Rules are highlighted in red and are especially pertinent for National Tournament use.  For each Division there is also a Common Rules page that describes rules that apply to all of the 5 games including the Pentathlete Code of Conduct.
