Finding Everyday Care for Your Loved One with Memory Loss

Remember as a kid, you used to dread those difficult conversations with your parents--the ones that make you feel uncomfortable or afraid. Fast forward to your adult years, and it can be the same situation about conversations with your loved ones that cause anxiety.

Fear not (always wanted to say that), we have some ideas for you on how to plan everyday care of a loved one and even how to have an honest conversation about appropriate care. Whether it be about concern about driving, legal issues or financial management, the experts agree that a non-threatening approach from a position of love and respect is the first step.

Here's a brief video from the Alzheimer's Association's training portal to get you started.

The Southern Caregiver Resource Center has put together an excellent fact sheet providing no-nonsense tips for families plan for care.

Helping Family Make Everyday Care Choices
Understanding (and Preparing for) Behavioral Changes

As a caregiver, your day is filled with planning and organizing  your loved one's routines and then, suddenly, a mood shifts. They become agitated or unjustifiable paranoid. How do you respond? Why did this happen?

Behavior changes do occur in those with dementia and can be triggered by a change in environment, an ailment or a number of other causes.

While the caregiver might not have control over the behavior, they can manage how they react. The Southern Caregiver Resource Center has a great fact sheet for dealing with changes in behaviors and how to react.

When Is the Right Time to Place?

Deciding to place a loved one in a memory care community is an individual decision, but what factors go into the decision making process?

Based on ActivCare's nearly 30 years of caring for those with memory loss and partnering with their loving families, we have prepared an article for those considering residential memory care.  It's a brief and honest evaluation of what to consider when looking for long term care of loved ones--a great resource for families.

Meet Our Newest Residents

Recently, we introduced Companion Cats to our ActivCare communities. These animatronic pets provide companionship for our residents--and they don't have to be fed or walked! All they need is love and a scratch or two behind the ear.

Learn more about how these new friends are getting along with our residents.

Now That's Punny

My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned: couldn't concentrate.

I can't believe I got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off.

I wasn't originally going to get a brain transplant, but then I changed my mind.

I'm glad I know sign language, it's pretty handy.

How do you get off a non-stop flight?

I am on a seafood diet. Every time I see food, I eat it.

A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
