Happy New Year! Please note that Johns Disposal will collect garbage, recycling and bulk items as scheduled on Monday, January 2. However, the Village Office will be closed on Monday and will re-open on Tuesday, January 3.

During the month of January, the Village Public Works staff will pick up wreaths and Christmas trees left at the edge of the road. Lights, ornaments and other decorations must be removed for wreaths and trees to be collected.
Please note the Public Works staff is only picking up Christmas trees and wreaths; no other yard waste or branches can be collected.

There were six poll workers from Wind Point who assisted the Racine County Clerk's Office with the presidential recount last month. The recount went smoothly, with no significant changes to the results. Wind Point's count was reduced by two votes. Racine County as a whole changed by 169 votes and the State of Wisconsin saw a total increase of 566 votes. Thank you to our poll workers who assisted the County with the recount!
Deadline for Village Board Nomination Forms is January 3
Just a reminder for residents interested in running for Village Office in April that the deadline for submitting nomination forms to the Village Office is Tuesday, January 3 at 5 p.m.
The incumbents for the Village Trustee positions that are up for election are Donald Gloo, Marty Meissner and Susan Sanabria. The current Village President Pete Christensen has filed a notice of non-candidacy indicating he will not seek re-election for Village President.

Property Taxes Due January 31

The first installment of property taxes are due by January 31. Payments may be made by mail, dropbox or in person at the Village Office. Additionally, payments may also be made at Johnson Bank. After January 31, tax payments must be made to the Racine County Treasurer’s Office.
If you need a copy of your bill, you can find it online from the Racine County Treasurer's website at http://racinecounty.com/government/county-treasurer/tax-inquiry. After you search for your property record, look for the dropdown menu title “Select Detail” and choose "Taxes." From the tax page, you can see past payments as well as links for your most recent property tax statements.
Dog License Reminder
Residents are encouraged to renew dog licenses this time of year when you are coming to the Village Office to pay your tax bill. A dog license application can be found on the bottom of the insert mailed with the property tax bill. Additional applications can be download from the Village website or picked up at the Village Office. The fee for a dog license is $15 per altered (neutered or spayed) dog and $35 per unaltered dog. A $10 late fee is added on for dog licenses obtained after April 1. Submit the application and fee along with a copy of an unexpired rabies certificate obtained from your veterinarian to the Village Office. If submitting by mail, be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the receipt and tag to be returned to you.

Reminder to Clean Up After Your Dog
|
|
All dog owners are reminded to do their part and clean up after their dog when walking in the Village. Section 4-41 of the Village Code requires dog owners to pick up and properly dispose pet waste. The ordinance is in effect no matter the weather or the amount of snow on the ground. Violations may be reported to the village police department.
Dog waste is a nuisance to neighbors as well as public works staff who work to keep public areas well-maintained. Dog waste is also one of the top contributors to contamination of stormwater runoff, which has a significant negative impact on area streams and Lake Michigan. For many reasons it is important to clean up after your dog and properly dispose pet waste!

Village Mailbox Replacement Policy

Despite our best efforts during winter clean-up operations, there are times when mailboxes get knocked over, either by the snow plow blade or by snow pushed by the plow. It is the Village policy that the Village will replace any mailboxes damaged by the plow itself, but property owners are responsible for repairing or replacing any mailboxes damaged by snow that was pushed by the plows.
Make sure your mailbox is winter-ready by ensuring it is straight, sturdy and stable and meets US Postal Service installation and maintenance requirements (pictured above): 41 to 45 inches off the ground, 6 to 8 inches back from the curb or edge of the pavement, buried 24 inches in the ground, and able to safely break away if struck by a vehicle.

Volunteers Needed for 2017 Lighthouse Tours
|
|
|
If you are looking for ways to get involved in the community in the new year, please consider volunteering at the Wind Point Lighthouse. Volunteers are needed to assist with the public tower tours, which take place five times per year on the first Sunday of the month from June through October. Volunteers will also be needed for private group tours. It is a great way to meet other people and enjoy the beauty of the historic lighthouse grounds! Information about volunteering can be found on the lighthouse's website located at windpointlighthouse.org/support or call the Village Office at 639-3524.

The Village Board of Trustees met for a regular meeting on December 8, 2016. The following actions took place at the meeting:
- Approved a memorandum of understanding to provide public works services to North Bay on an as-needed basis.
- Approved a sex offender residency restrictions ordinance.
- Approved going out to bid with Village Green Park renovations engineering and design plans.
- Referred the Parks & Facilities Committee to work with J. Ewens Design on park and entrance signage.
- Approved going out to bid with revised plans for the Lighthouse Beach Green Infrastructure project.
- Referred staff to follow-up on zoning concerns with the Wind Point School.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Village Hall (lighthouse).
