January IDEAS &INFO Luncheon:
Program Evaluation

How does your organization measure impact? Are your staff and board members aware of your programs' effectiveness? Are potential funders able to see the results of your most popular programs? Program evaluation is essential for nonprofits to gauge social impact, and organizations large and small have the ability to conduct them.

According to Dr. Taj Carson of Carson Research Consulting, funders use evaluations for an array reasons.
  • To ensure investments are making the desired impact.
  • To determine future investments.
  • To demonstrate efficient use of resources.
  • To engage with grantees about program work and possible improvements.
Join us for the January IDEAS &INFO Luncheon, where Dr. Taj Carson and the team from Carson Research Consulting will present on program evaluation and offer best practices for measurement and data collection.

The Benefits of Nonprofit Partnership
Mentoring to Manhood, a nonprofit in Prince George's since 2005, has merged with educational nonprofit, Community Tutoring, Inc., to form Community Youth Advance.

The new organization will continue to offer a Saturday tutoring program, but this partnership will expand educational services and sustain their mission of offering college and career preparation for African-American youth.

Daon Johnson
The new organization is led by Daon Johnson, formerly of of Mentoring to Manhood and Cindy Martin, formerly of Community Tutoring, Inc.

The merger highlights the benefits of nonprofit partnerships and collaboration. Insight spoke about the new organization with Daon Johnson, Executive Director of CommunityYouth Advance.

Insight:
Where did the idea of a merger originate?
CYA:
I began with Mentoring to Manhood in June 2015, and, in August, we brainstormed with leadership of the Prince George's County Schools about ways we could position ourselves as a regional education provider. This sped up the process to merge.

Insight:
How did the merger with Community Tutoring, Inc. expand the services offered?
CYA:
Community Tutoring, Inc. had oversight of the academics for our students in the Saturday tutoring program in addition to working with several schools in the county. The merger allowed us to:
  • Expand the Saturday tutoring program,
  • Expand into after-school tutoring programs, and
  • Operate in more schools in the county.
Insight:
What was the merger process with the Board of Directors?
CYA:
The board members had questions about losing the strong Mentoring to Manhood brand and if the merger would change the mission. As we have progressed and moved forward, the board members are at ease with the change. We merged our board with Community Tutoring, Inc. and we have worked together very closely to smoothly move forward.

Insight:
What are the future plans for Community Youth Advance?
CYA:
We plan to expand into a girls mentoring program in the fall and in a few years we plan to offer skills and training services for young adults aged 18 - 25.
