Announcement of Slab Cabin Run Initiative at the Annual Members' Meeting
The Annual Members' Meeting buzzed with excitement on October 28 with the announcement of ClearWater's newest land conservation project, the
Slab Cabin Run Initiative. ClearWater shared details of the project, which will conserve and restore 300 acres of farmland owned by the Meyer and Everhart families. The project will protect our community's drinking water, restore the health of the Slab Cabin Run, and preserve farmland that creates the appealing agricultural
landscape of Centre County. ClearWater's $2.75 million goal to fund the project will be a success when our entire community supports this effort.

ClearWater Awarded $100,000 Grant from Centre Foundation
ClearWater Conservancy was awarded the $100,000 Centre Inspires Grant from the Centre Foundation on November 1, 2016 at the Nittany Lion Inn. The grant will fund Centred Outdoors, a project intended to engage
people in the natural world through guided outings at various Centre County destinations.

The Centred Outdoors Challenge, a family-friendly fitness challenge set to launch in summer 2017, will promote exploration at eight Centre County destinations, including Mount Nittany, The Arboretum at Penn State, Spring Creek Canyon Trail, Millbrook Marsh, the Barrens to Bald Eagle Wildlife Corridor/Scotia Gamelands, Black Moshannon and Bald Eagle State Park and the Penns Creek Canyon Corridor and Talleyrand Park.
The effort is in collaboration with the Mount Nittany Health System, Penn State's Sustainability Institute, Penns Valley Conservation Association, Mount Nittany Conservancy and Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.
ClearWater is also teaming up with Centre Moves to launch the Prescription ParRx program, where physicians write prescriptions for time outdoors at various natural areas in Centre County. Once launched, Prescription PaRx and the Centred Outdoors Challenge will provide outdoor adventures options for community members of all ages and fitness levels.

Adventures in Conservation: Recap & Preview

October's Adventure in Conservation took place in the Barrens to Bald Eagle Wildlife Corridor.
Colleen DeLong and Lexie Orr led about 30 hikers on a guided tour prior to the Annual Members' Meeting to discuss the important role the Corridor plays for all wildlife.

November's AIC featured a presentation by mushroom expert, Bill Russell, who captivated his audience during his talk on Wild Mushrooms of PA at the Millbrook Marsh Nature Center.
|
|
|
|

Out and About with ClearWater Conservancy!

On November 9, ClearWater worked with WHM Consulting Inc. and Bud Snyder Excavating to install a stream crossing and improve a farm lane on the Terosky property. This improvement will reduce sediment and nutrients in Halfmoon Creek. This work is part of a stream buffer planted in
Fall 2015. Thanks to the Terosky family for the stewardship of the streams on their land.

On November 2, Adrienne Gemberling stopped in to Park Forest Elementary for an eventful presentation on macroinvertebrates and how different quantities of different species in the water indicates stream health. Some students held a crayfish for the very first time while others chose to observe.
|
|
|
|
|
On November 15, seven volunteers pitched in clear debris out of "Dry Run," including scraps of metal, corroded sheets and a pair of crumpled wheelbarrows. In total, the coalition of consisting of ClearWater, Spring Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited, the Water Resources Monitoring Project and Centre County Refuse and Recycling, cleaned up 1,000 pounds of metal and more than 1,500 pounds of municipal solid waste, much of which was recycled.

Spring Creek Watershed AmeriCorps member and Andrea Murrell, Strategic Communications Coordinator! Lexie is leading the Adventures in Conservation program and multiple other projects. ClearWater Conservancy to display at Alternative Christmas Fair on December 4th at University Baptist and Brethren Church from 11-2 p.m.
The Alternative Christmas Fair is designed to help those in need by providing an opportunity for holiday shoppers to support local, national and international charitable organizations. During the Fair, shoppers visit the booths to learn about the various organizations, then privately select which organizations will receive their donations as gifts in honor of family and friends. Donors receive cards to present as gifts to those they donated in honor of.
