Dean Anil Makhija, Fisher College 0f Business, In Brazil
With the goal to increase relationships in Brazil, leadership from the Fisher College of Business spent three days, August 1-3, in São Paulo, meeting with leading universities and industry partners and engaging with alumni, Ohio State friends and prospective students.

Dean Anil Makhija and Professor Peter Ward visited top public and private universities in São Paulo and in nearby São Bernardo do Campo (recognized as a manufacturing epicenter of Brazil) to build relationships and explore collaborations that will provide global opportunities for Fisher students and faculty.

During their trip, Makhija delivered the keynote address at the National Finance Forum jointly organized by Visagio and The Ohio State University.  Visagio is a global consulting firm with offices in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, London, Perth and Moscow. At the Finance Forum, Makhija's presentation focused on the financial and operational opportunities and challenges of middle market firms in Brazil, the United States and globally.

"Dean Makhija's visit was very important to reaffirm Fisher's international vocation and commitment to Latin America," said Weber Pimenta, Visagio's managing partner. "It was an excellent opportunity to expose and strengthen Fisher's brand with networks in the region, mainly companies and local education institutions. This will help us develop new partnerships and business opportunities for the college's students and faculty, contributing for a more intense knowledge and cultural exchange."

More than 30 Ohio State and Fisher alumni and partners joined prospective students to celebrate Ohio State and learn from Makhija and Ward about Fisher's vision and the ways it is positioning itself as a leading business school with meaningful global engagement with companies and leading academic institutions around the world.

Want To Learn Portuguese At Ohio State? Check This Online Opportunity!
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese (SPPO) at Ohio State is excited to announce new and entirely online Portuguese language courses! These courses deliver the same exceptional quality and academic rigor you expect from a traditional face-to-face Ohio State course, but with the flexibility to complete the weekly assignments at your convenience. The courses received overwhelmingly positive feedback from prior students who participated in them.

While the design of the online courses follow the same curriculum and overarching learning objectives as a face-to-face course, the teaching framework in which the content is delivered is modified to fit the needs of online learners. The online courses will usually be divided into week-long modules where students will have:
  • A central topic or task to complete
  • Supporting materials (e.g., videos, reading, or other media)
  • Ongoing discussion and collaboration with your professor and classmates
  • An opportunity to practice and receive feedback
Check the online video of the program, Portuguese 1101.

Students will have easy 24-hour access to all the material. Participants will progress through the course work just like they would in a traditional classroom with assignments, assessments and participation requirements. These courses are designed to provide students with constant opportunities to interact with their peers in activities that will develop their ability to read, write, speak and understand spoken Portuguese.

For autumn semester 2017, SPPO will offer three Portuguese language and culture courses in an online format: PORT 1101, PORT 1102 and PORT 1103. These three-sequence Portuguese language and culture courses can be used to fulfill the GE Foreign Language requirement. Registration for autumn 2017 online Portuguese courses is now open. Global Perspectives: Leonardo Sprintzin
Leonardo Sprintzin is a 2017 graduate of the Fisher College of Business and is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Knowing that I wanted the tools to make the difference in the future, applying to Ohio State was a clear decision for me. Now that I have just graduated and am a proud Buckeye alumnus, I would like to recount my Ohio State experience!

One powerful tool that Ohio State provided me with is a connection to the world through a diverse campus environment. Within the student body, you can find people from all over the world, which means that respect and tolerance are important pillars of this institution. Meeting new people and consequently discovering new cultures expands our ability to understand and work with others, giving us the ability to overcome and prevent any ethnic or racial divisions, ultimately helping us to fight ignorance.

Being able to attend an institution with a strong reputation for excellence as Ohio State was crucial for me in order to help me achieve my dreams of having a successful career. After all, as the great Mahatma Gandhi once said, "The future depends on what you do today." I am certain that attending The Ohio State University taught me a lot about the world so that in the future I can help alleviate ignorance, and create a more peaceful planet through my work.
