CORA Connection
Summer Review

Bill Becker, Chairman,
CORA's Board of Directors

Throughout the summer CORA's staff continue to offer services to improve the lives of children through the running of summer camps, supporting clients, evaluating and improving our programs, engaging the community, and preparing for another banner year. Coming off of our most successful golf outing to date, we are excited for what's to come and yet not quite ready for the summer to end.

This summer, CORA partnered with The Philadelphia Youth Network's WorkReady Program, coordinating the recruitment, screening, placement and professional development of 35 students, all of which were placed in jobs in various departments at CORA. All of the participants completed a six-week, paid work experience that fosters the acquisition of 21st-century skills through work-based learning. We concluded their work experience by bringing our WorkReady students and our YouthCOR Superhero Summer Camp kids together for a giant field day at Belmont Grove. The superhero obstacle course and water balloon fight made it a memorable day for more than 250 kids as well as our staff!

While our older kids were picnicking in the park, CORA's youngest learners were wearing caps and gowns, proceeding down the aisle of Founders Hall, La Salle University's brand new School of Business auditorium. On Thursday, August 10th, Early Years La Salle hosted its 5th Annual Graduation and Move Up Ceremony and sent 21 children, and their very enthusiastic parents, off to kindergarten. It was a wonderful day for our families and staff and moments like this exemplify CORA's mission.

Many of you have come to know CORA as a place that prepares children and families for productive futures, supports them through tough times, and creates meaningful relationships in the process. And thanks to CORA's staff and extended family, we also have lots of fun in the process, as I'm sure those of you who attended the golf outing can attest to. On behalf of the entire CORA team, THANK YOU to everyone who joined us as a sponsor, vendor, golfer or guest!

It has been a very busy, but very enjoyable summer at CORA and I am thankful for all those who have made it possible. Many thanks as well to those who supported CORA at any point, in any way, during the 2016-2017 year - your support fuels our work in strengthening families and communities in the Philadelphia area. I hope you and your families enjoy the last days of summer together!

The Importance of Early Childhood Education &
CORA's Philosophy on Early Learning

Celebrating 5 years of Preschool Grads at La Salle University!

CORA's Early Years Preschool Programs (in the Fox Chase section of NE Philadelphia and on the campus of La Salle University) have been the foundation of education for many 2 ½ - 5 year-old children. For the kids, it may be their first experience in an organized, structured setting, with instructors, lessons and peers. For the parents, it may be the

first time they are leaving their child/children in the care of adults other than themselves or close family members. Regardless of the particular situation, centers of early learning that are doing it well, are providing the kind of experience that introduces kids to school in a way that prepares thatto embrace lifelong learning. School readiness-a young child's preparation for K-12 success-is commonly discussed in the early childhood education literature. Research has shown that preschool, particularly high-quality preschool, plays an important role in developing many of the cognitive and social skills that researchers as well as educators consider to be essential for school readiness. Read the full article here.

" We saw the Early Years sign in front of the building near our daughter Journie's doctor's office when she was around two years old. We realized that our daughter was eager to learn and socialize early. To encourage her enthusiasm and interests, we started the process of looking for a preschool that would stimulate her. From the minute I walked in the door, I could tell that CORA's Early Years program had a caring culture. The staff showed genuine love for teaching and for the kids as individuals. The teacher instantly connected with Journie and we just knew this was the perfect place for her."
