Director of Film Program Appointed to Board

"The arts are the chronicle of human aspirations," says the Council's newest trustee, Stephen Pite. "By sustaining and supporting the arts at the center of Vermont community life the Vermont Arts Council brings focus and structure to the passion, integrity, and complexity of creative expression. I am proud to serve its mission."

Stephen is the director of the MFA film program at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. Previously, he was on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts, the Southern California Institute of Architecture, and the Art Institute of New York City. Stephen is a graduate of the School of Visual Arts, Columbia University, and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. He is serving as Governor Scott's representative to the Council's board of trustees.

Schools Can Apply for Artist Residency Grants

The Artists in Schools program is a win-win-win. Schools gain access to arts professionals trained in integrating arts into the curriculum. Students are provided a creative experience with an artist and an opportunity to explore new ways of learning. Teaching artists share their expertise with both students and teachers - and get a paycheck!

Applications are being accepted for the 2017-18 school year. Artists in Schools Grants fund artist residencies of up to ten days and serve as a model for the integration of the arts across the PreK-12 curriculum.

Vermont Public Radio Celebrates its Fortieth Anniversary

The June 29 inaugural concert in Studio One is number 39 on the "40 Moments that Defined VPR" list. Pianist Simone Dinnerstein performed pieces by Schubert and Glass on a Steinway concert grand piano donated for the state-of-the-art recording, performance, and convening space in the newly renovated Colchester headquarters.

VPR has always supported the arts through news coverage and programming. Now it can offer live and broadcast performances to showcase Vermont's broad array of music. Thank you VPR to your commitment to the arts in Vermont.

Steamroller Art: Commentary by Charlotte Albright

This is the first paragraph of Charlotte Albright's commentary broadcast on VPR:
Here's something you don't see at every farmer's market: a guy driving a steamroller over a piece of paper big enough to fill a parking space. The paper is laid over a piece of intricately carved wood or linoleum, which has been inked, and the result is a big, bold, beautiful print.

This is the final paragraph:
To keep up momentum, cash-strapped towns like these need lots of volunteers and generous benefactors, but like that steamroller at the farmers' market, they're revving up and forging ahead.

Grants Run the Gamut

Where can you find dance, film, and music projects alongside theater, sculpture, and memoir? In the Council's list of Creation Grants, of course! Projects span from the stories of female veterans to Vaudeville and back to portraits of Housing Authority residents.

Find out who the artists are and what inspired them in this week's featured story: A Look at All Creation.

The Vermont Arts Council is funded, in part, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts , which requires a 1:1 match from the Vermont State Legislature. Council grants, programs, and statewide arts promotion would not be possible without the critical funding provided by these government agencies.
