The Sundays after Pentecost
As on most Sundays during "Ordinary Time", the longest season of the church year, vestments and altar cloth are green, the color of growth and life.

From Rev. Ellen

August 14, 2017
Dear sisters and brothers in Christ:
In April, the Diocese of Chicago hosted a
Bishops United Against Gun Violence conference about the unholy trinity of racism, poverty and violence. This weekend in Charlottesville, as white supremacists rioted and terrorized people of goodwill, we saw yet again the wages of these sins and the destruction that they wreak in families, communities, and in our country.
Whenever we witness this kind of horrific violence, Christians are called to pray and act. Pray for Heather Heyer, who was killed in Charlottesville while she was demonstrating against hatred, and for the state troopers who died when their helicopter crashed. Pray for an end to racism and white supremacy, and pray for the fortitude to continue working for justice and peace through dark days like these.
On Saturday, September 30 from 9 am until noon, we have an opportunity to put our prayers into action when the Rev. Julian DeShazier, senior pastor of University Church, Chicago, visits St. James Commons for a discussion in which he will expand on his remarks at our April conference and help us chart a course for our diocese's continued work against systemic racism and its interlocking oppressions. You can
find out more about Julian's visit and register on our website.
Standing against white supremacy is a gospel imperative, and I am grateful for all of you across our diocese who are answering God's call in these difficult times.
Faithfully,
The Rt. Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee
Bishop of Chicago

Singing builds confidence, reduces stress and anxiety, and raises endorphins. No kidding! So come out for a rehearsal and see what a great time we have!
Emmanuel's adult choir is open to everyone. High school students are especially welcome! Music reading and previous choral experience are helpful but not required.
First rehearsal: Wednesday, September 6, from 7 to 9 pm in the choir room. Choir also meets each Sunday at 8am before the 10am choral liturgy.
If you have questions, please email [email protected] or call George at (312) 835-2526.

Fall Bike Ride
We are scheduling a Fall Bike Ride after church on September 24th (weather permitting).
We will leave after 10:00 mass and take the Bemis Wood trail to York Tavern where we will enjoy lunch and bike back after. If some people would like to skip the bike ride and just join us at York Tavern, than would be great. We will need a rough head count to let York Tavern know how many to expect.

Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
In the Mental Health First Aid course, you will learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help.

Saint of the Week:
Saint Mary the Virgin, Mother of our Lord
15 August NT
The honor paid to Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus Christ our Lord and God, goes back to the earliest days of the Church. Indeed, it goes back further, for even before the birth of her Son, Mary prophesied, "From this time forth, all generations shall call me blessed."
The New Testament records several incidents from the life of the Virgin: her betrothal to Joseph, the Annunciation by the angel Gabriel that she was to bear the Messiah, her Visitation to Elizabeth the mother of John the Baptist, the Nativity of our Lord, the visits of the shepherds and the magi, the Presentation of the infant Jesus in the Temple at the age of forty days, the flight into Egypt, the Passover visit to the Temple when Jesus was twelve, the wedding at Cana in Galilee and the performance of her Son's first miracle at her intercession, the occasions when observers said, "How can this man be special? We know his family!"
Also, an occasion when she came with others to see him while he was preaching, her presence at the foot of the Cross, where Jesus commends her to the care of the Beloved Disciple, and her presence with the apostles in the upper room after the Ascension, waiting for the promised Spirit. She is thus seen to be present at most of the chief events of her Son's life.
Besides Jesus himself, only two humans are mentioned by name in the Creeds. One is Pontius Pilate, Roman procurator of Judea from 26 to 36 AD. The other name is that of Mary. The Creeds say that Christ was "born of the virgin Mary." That is to say, they assert on the one hand that he was truly and fully human, born of a woman and not descended from the skies like an angel. On the other hand, by telling us that his mother was a virgin they exclude the theory that he was simply an ordinary man who was so virtuous that he eventually, at his baptism, became filled with the Spirit of God.
His virgin birth attests to the fact that he was always more than merely human, always one whose presence among us was in itself a miracle, from the first moment of his earthly existence. In Mary, Virgin and Mother, God gives us a sign that Jesus is both truly God and truly Man.
It sometimes happens that someone will report an appearance of the Virgin Mary, bearing a message, usually encouraging faithfulness in prayer. Little is known of the life of the Virgin Mary except insofar as it intersects with the life of her Son, and there is an appropriateness in this. The Scriptures record her words to the angel Gabriel, to her kinswoman Elizabeth, to her Son on two occasions. But the only recorded saying of hers to what may be called ordinary, run-of-the-mill hearers is her instruction to the servants at the wedding feast, to whom she says simply, indicating her Son, "Whatever he says to you, do it."
This we may take to be the summation of her message to the world. If we listen to her, she will tell us, "Listen to Him. Listen to my Son. Do what He tells you." When we see her, we see her pointing to her Son. If our regard for the Blessed Virgin does not have the immediate effect of turning our attention from her to the One whom she carried in her womb for nine months and suckled at her breast, to the Incarnate God, the Word made flesh, then we may be sure that it is not the kind of regard that she seeks. A right regard for her will always direct us to Him Who found in her His first earthly dwelling-place.

BEDS Plus- Village of LaGrange Moves Shelter from Emmanuel
As you may be aware BEDS Plus provides emergency overnight shelter and comprehensive supportive services in southwest suburban Cook County, IL. BEDS provides housing, prevention, and stabilization services for the community.
One piece of BEDS' mission is to provide emergency overnight shelters seven days a week from October 1 through May 15. As part of the development agreement with the Village of LaGrange that governs the permanent supportive housing being constructed at 9601 Ogden, BEDS Plus is required to move its emergency overnight shelters so that only two churches in LaGrange will host emergency shelters.
Sadly, Emmanuel will be replaced by St. Hugh Church in Lyons. After 30 years of supporting BEDS (of which our own Molly Salisbury was a founder and the former Executive Director), we are disappointed to lose this outreach opportunity. The good news is that there are still many opportunities to support this important organization, which does so much for our homeless brothers and sisters.
Here are some of the things we can do:
* Volunteer at the new Wednesday evening site or any other. St. Hugh in Lyons has agreed to host the emergency shelter, but they need volunteers. Whether you're a seasoned BEDS volunteer or are just contemplating how you might assist, BEDS needs your help! Volunteer information sessions are held on a monthly basis at the administrative office in LaGrange. Call (708) 354-0858 or visit
www.beds-plus.org for additional information.
* Write an email or drop a note to Village of LaGrange Trustees expressing your displeasure that BEDS - with its long history at Emmanuel - was forced out of our worship community.
* Donate to the BEDS capital campaign that will fund the ongoing operations of the permanent supportive housing on Ogden Avenue. Day services will continue to be provided at Emmanuel until the new building is complete early next year.
