National Wild Turkey Federation

Senator Pettyjohn joined the Governor and members of the Wild Turkey Federation of Delaware last Sunday to sign SB 106 creating a special license plate for members of the Wild Turkey Federation.

"It was great to work with the folks of the Delaware chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation. They've done some great work here in DE with increasing population, maintaining habitat and bringing turkeys back here for Delaware, since they are native species,"

Great recognition for a wonderful conservation group. In the next decade, NWTF Delaware is expected to conserve or enhance more than 11,000 acres of wildlife habitat in Delaware.

Changing age doesn't have to mean changing insurance rates -
HA 1 of HB 80 signed.

HA 1 of HB80 sets forth the permissible uses of credit information in rating personal insurance and prohibits insurance companies from increasing rates on current customers solely for having reached the age of 75 or above or for having a change in marital status due to the death of a spouse.

"It's a good consumer protection bill. It restricts the ins co from arbit raising premiums for certain things, such as your age. If you haven't had any accidents and you get to an advanced age there's no reason for your insurance premiums to go up.  Divorce. Just because there's a change in marital status does not mean somebody is an increased risk on the road. This really protects the consumer and lays those rails for what insurance companies can and cannot do for raising your base premium," said Senator Pettyjohn.

Cyber Security a Priority for DE

Information that companies hold about Delawareans should be safer with the passage of  HS 1 for HB 180, an Act that addresses breaches of security involving personal information. It's a bill Senator Pettyjohn helped sponsor.

"It's important that businesses in Delaware that keep information on customers know how to keep that information secure. Right now, stealing personal information is one of the most lucrative markets out there for criminals. It's extremely important that businesses know what to do and that there are guidelines for businesses to follow if breaches occur," said Senator Pettyjohn. "This bill really does that."

Governor Carney Signs H B 190 to Modernize the Coastal Zone Act
New law will allow responsible redevelopment of 14 legacy industrial sites along coastline

Senator Pettyjohn was onhand earlier this month when Governor John Carney signed into law House Bill 190 -  bipartisan legislation that modernizes Delaware's Coastal Zone Act. The new law will allow for the responsible redevelopment of 14 legacy industrial sites in the coastal zone, new job creation, and additional environmental clean-up of those legacy sites along Delaware's coastline.

"Coastal Zone has really been the benchmark for states and areas to follow to help protect their coastal zones. With Delaware Coastal Zone Act, it was written over 40 years ago, and legislation such as this, even though it is the gold standard, has to be revisited every once in a while to take in account for the new normal in the economy," said Senator Pettyjohn.

"While not everyone wasn't happy with what we did here,  it will allow some investment groups, some companies to move into these abandoned sites and to:
  •  1. Help them clean them up, more rapidly if they were left just sitting there.
  •  2. Importantly as well, employ Delawareans.

This is an employment opportunity act. If we can bring companies in, and I think we already have companies interested in coming in, and employ Delawareans at good wages and clean up the areas at an accelerated rate...That's a win for everybody. "

Removing Barriers to Absentee voting for DE Voters
New law removes notary requirement, expanding voting access for younger Delawareans attending school out of state

Governor John Carney recently signed into law House bill 47, bipartisan legislation that removes the notary requirement for qualified Delaware voters requesting absentee ballots. The legislation will eliminate a barrier for voters seeking to cast votes in Delaware elections - especially young Delaware voters attending school out of state.

Representative Lyndon Yearick and Senator Brian Bushweller sponsored the legislation, along with Senator Brian Pettyjohn and Representative Kim Williams. Governor Carney signed the legislation in Dover on Friday, surrounded by its sponsors and college students from Delaware.
