2018 Gund-Harrington Scholar Award
Grant Program Seeks to Hasten the Development of Vision-Restoring Therapies..
The Gund-Harrington Initiative for Fighting Blindness announces the call for proposals for the 2018 Gund-Harrington Scholar Award. The Gund-Harrington Scholar Award supports innovative research efforts that could prevent, treat or cure blindness resulting from inherited retinal degenerative diseases. The Gund-Harrington Scholar Award is part of the Gund-Harrington Initiative for Fighting Blindness and sponsored by Foundation Fighting Blindness and Harrington Discovery Institute.
The competition is open to investigators at accredited academic medical centers, research institutions and universities in the U.S. and Canada. Applicants must have a PhD or MD degree (or equivalent) and demonstrate exceptional promise.
Letters of Intent are now being accepted through midnight on October 25, 2017.

Gene editing may make pigs into organ donors for people
The shortage of human organs and tissues for transplantation represents one of the most significant unmet medical needs. Xenotransplantation holds great promise. Porcine organs are considered favorable resources for xenotransplantation since they are similar to human organs in size and function, and can be bred in large numbers.
However, the clinical use of porcine organs has been hindered by immunological incompatibilities and by the potential risk of PERV transmission . PERVs are gamma retroviruses found in the genome of all pig strains and can be vertically transferred through inheritance . Although to date, no study has shown PERV transmission to humans in clinical settings, it has been demonstrated that PERVs can infect human cells and integrate into human genome in cell culture . PERV integration could potentially lead to immunodeficiency and tumorigenesis, as reported with other retroviruses .
The experiments, reported in the Science may make it possible one day to transplant livers, hearts and other organs from pigs into humans.
