NLBMDA Supports Repeal of Estate Tax, Preservation of Mortgage Interest Deduction in Tax Reform
On July 17, NLBMDA submitted comments to Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, regarding comprehensive tax reform. NLBMDA maintains that comprehensive tax reform is needed to restore and sustain the competitiveness of America's small businesses. The comments focused on the need to repeal the estate tax and preserve the mortgage interest deduction, and were submitted as the Finance Committee begins holding hearings on comprehensive tax reform.
Full and permanent repeal of the estate tax would bring the greatest level certainty to small businesses. Current law does not adequately recognize the high asset base of lumber and building material dealers' businesses or set the exemption level high enough to adequately cover the value of non-cash assets.
In addition, as Congress explores comprehensive tax reform, it is essential for continued economic growth and the health of the housing industry that the mortgage interest deduction be preserved as part of the tax code. NLBMDA is deeply concerned that reducing or eliminating the mortgage interest deduction could have a devastating effect on homeowners, the housing market, and the nation's economy. Read More.

U.S. Imposes Additional Tariffs on Canadian Lumber
The U.S. will impose further punitive tariffs on imports of softwood lumber from Canada, escalating a longstanding trade dispute that's already led to higher timber prices.
Preliminary anti-dumping duties of as much as 7.7 percent will be levied on Canadian producers, the U.S. Department of Commerce said in a June 2017 statement. The move follows the government's decision in April to slap countervailing tariffs of up to 24.1 percent on shipments from Canadian companies.
Until Canada and the U.S. reach a negotiated solution on softwood lumber, the nation will continue to "vigorously apply" the anti-dumping and countervailing duties to "stand up for American companies and their workers," U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a statement.
