Dear Friends,

The events last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia highlighted the hatred and bigotry of white supremacist groups and the devastating racial violence in our country. It was shocking to watch and to realize three people died and many others were injured because of it. It was equally disturbing to see these racist viewpoints supported overtly and subtly by leaders in our country. This is a low point in our painful history of whites oppressing people of color. It is vital that we not look away, but rather that we free our minds to change our systems that promote white economies and privilege at the expense of others. The mindset of our country will change one community at a time; our work is here in front of us in Rochester. I am hopeful for what we can do and for what is already in progress. On Monday evening I attended a Community Conversation on Black Lives Matter at Baden Park on Upper Falls Boulevard. Rev. Myra Brown and members of our SPARC group hosted it, many of which were part of the Race Convoy that traveled south at Easter time. Our group canvassed the neighborhood on Saturday, knocking on doors and inviting people to join them on Monday night for the rally and for hamburgers and hots. The rally was planned a few weeks ago, but the weekend events in Charlottesville focused the importance of condemning white supremacy and uplifting black lives. I was very happy to meet some of the leaders of the community that lies just to the north of Spiritus Christi. They shared with me some amazing facilities and programs that they have built and are in the process of building to serve the community. They appreciated the outreach of Spiritus to their neighborhood. A number of people signed up to continue to meet in response to Rev. Myra's invitation to dialogue with us at Spiritus about what they think and value and believe. We need to come ready to listen. I'm looking forward to those meetings and invite you to attend with me as future dates are announced.

Join Fr. Jim for the final Summer Mass in the Park on Tuesday, August 29 at 6 pm. We'll meet at the Sycamore Lodge in Ellison Park for Mass followed by a dish-to-pass supper. Bring a friend with you!

Do you have someone in your life you need to forgive?
Are you harboring guilt over your own actions and having difficulty forgiving yourself? Forgiveness is an essential spiritual key to our own growth and happiness, but sometimes it can seem out of our reach. On Tuesdays, September 5, 12, and 19, we'll offer three early evenings to focus, learn, and pray for forgiveness. Join Brian O'Neill, Patti Fields, and me from 6:15 - 7:30 pm at Spiritus Christi. All you need to bring with you is the willingness to let God guide you.

Do you have a baby or young child ready to be baptized? Come to our Baptism Class on Wednesday, August 23, at 7 pm in the Nielsen Room at Spiritus. Please sign up for the class by calling the office (325-1180).

Do you love to sing? Join our summer walk-in choir this Sunday, August 20 at 9:30 Mass at Hochstein. Rehearsal is at 8:30 am. You can email spiritsingers121@gmail.com for more information.

August is Overdose Awareness Month, and sadly, this year, we have had funerals for many people who have died from an overdose of drugs. On Thursday, August 24, we are having a Mass of Remembrance to celebrate those lost to addiction. We will read the names of loved ones that have died. Everyone is welcome.

If you enjoy golfing, join me at the Grace of God Golf Tournament on Sunday, September 10. It's so much fun, and it benefits this great ministry. You can sign up after Mass!

I treasure these long days of summer. Let the beauty of the earth nurture you.

Love,

Rev. Mary
