The Resource Connection
Weekly Update
|
In just a few days families across Central Massachusetts will be celebrating holidays that have similarities in their focus. In the darkest part of the year, we use the symbolism of light to brighten our hearts and spirits. Be it Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, each holiday focuses on family, shared values and faith. The miracle of birth and promise of love and acceptance, the miracle of one day of sacred oil lasting for eight nights in the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BC, and the shared principles of Kwanzaa that serve to unite a people in the pursuit of common good all bring us together.
This year there is much uncertainty in our community as we face the upcoming year. Promises that changes will be made in systems that support those with disabilities create fear and dread for many of us. More than ever, it is incumbent upon us to stand together, and using our shared values to advocate for what our families need not just to survive but to thrive.
This is a gift we can give to ourselves and our loved ones. It probably won't be easy but what choice do we have but to be the voice for those who do not have a voice and support those who can speak first hand of their needs.
If our extended family of the autism community can stand together, becoming one voice, and add our voice to the voices of others with shared concerns, I have faith that we too can work miracles. There will be light in the darkness and that light is ours.
Again and again I see this in our community, thank you ALL for your generous gifts to the Fire Relief fund, your thoughtfulness will make all the difference this Christmas to the family. There are other families in Central Massachusetts who have gifts for their children this holiday because other families embraced the spirit of the season AND their extended Autism Center family. Thank you to all who made a difference. You restore my faith in the innate goodness of man.
What ever you celebrate this week, all of us at the Center wish you joy, peace and strength.
Sue, Kris, Cid, David, Priya, Wanja, Donmarie, & Dianne.
