CFPA Releases Southern CA Child Care Case Studies and Survey Highlights

Today, CFPA is releasing survey findings and child care case studies that highlight ways in which family child care homes in Southern California are supporting child nutrition. Research shows that nutrition habits and preferences start in the womb and develop within the first 5 years of life.

Young children are especially vulnerable to the impacts of food insecurity, with poor nutrition affecting a young child's ability to learn and grow. Alarmingly, of the more than 3 million California children between the ages of 0 to 5, 22 percent live in poverty.

These new resources highlight some of the ways in which family child care home providers are incorporating nutrition practices into their businesses. Providers featured are from San Bernardino, San Diego, and Kern Counties.

This work would not have been possible without the generous support of Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Grant Program and assistance from Resource and Referral Agencies who helped us disseminate our survey and identify family child care providers going above and beyond to support child nutrition in Southern California.

Urge California to Leverage ESSA to Support Student's Nutritional Needs

The California Department of Education is seeking input on elements of California's ESSA state plan. Several policy and funding provisions in ESSA support student wellness and can be leveraged to help meet students' nutritional needs. However, California's current plan misses a tremendous opportunity to more fully integrate nutrition into education policy and practice.

Addressed to our education decision makers in Sacramento, this sign-on letter urges the California Department of Education to  ensure  that ESSA is leveraged to h elp more students access the academic and health benefits of school nutrition programs.
