Beloved friends,
Things seem pretty chaotic in our country and in our world these days. The physical response we have to that chaos may include fear or dread, tenseness, and anxiety. We feel like we want to curl up into a protective ball and wait for safety. Or maybe we feel like striking out at anyone who comes near, certain that we have to defend what we have or what we believe.
A colleague noted in a recent email that the behavior we see happening in Charlottesville and other places around the country is a response to a way of thinking and feeling. The cause is consciousness. And we know that consciousness can be changed, starting with ourselves.
The only way to change consciousness is to move to a different place within our own thoughts and feelings. We can't change a consciousness of hate with more hate, a conscousness of judgment with more judgment, a consciousness of violence with more violence. We CAN change it with love.
My colleague wrote, as part of a prayer, "M
ay all of my conversations, thoughts, and actions contribute to the rising up of love and goodwill, in and for all people in this country that I love."
Yes -- may everything we do contribute to the rising up of love, goodwill, peace, and joy for ourselves and every other person in our country and world. May we each an instrument of peace, the pattern of peace and perfection in the chaos.
I'll see you this Sunday!
With enormous love,
Rev. CC
