Eclipse Viewing on Monday, August 21!
All of us at Veritas are excited about the rare event of a solar eclipse coming up this Monday morning--not surprisingly, including our science faculty! Students will take some time to construct eclipse viewing mechanisms in their science classes this week, and are asked to bring these with them on Monday, when their teachers will take them to the field for eclipse viewing.
We ask all families to stay safe and speak with your children about how to view the eclipse without damage to the eyes. Below is a convenient reference based on official NASA and Parks Service sources.

Mentor Meetings Begin After School on Tuesday, August 22
All 6th-grade students will stay in their classrooms after 6th period on Tuesday, August 22 to meet with their mentors.
All new students not in 6th grade, meet in room 205 directly after 6th period on Tuesday, August 22.
Parents and rides, please note, these mentor meetings end
at 3:15 PM.
These meetings will continue
every other Tuesday, from 2:45 - 3:15 PM.

Jazz Lab Band
A new Jazz Lab band is being formed at Veritas! It is open to middle school and high school musicians, and will meet before school (time?) on Mondays and Wednesdays in M2, beginning on Monday, August 21st. The Lab Band will explore jazz music and learn to improvise. A knowledge of jazz and improvisation is not required to join, but musicians need to know how to play their instruments. Please contact Mr. Coste for more details.

Curriculum Night, August 24
Current Veritas Prep parents and guardians, please join us for an energy-filled evening to meet your students' teachers and learn more about what we teach and how we teach it!
Attend a miniature version of your student's school day! Each teacher will be giving short, active lessons as you travel around with your section, navigate passing periods, and learning a little more about what it's like to be a student here at Veritas Prep. This is a great opportunity to meet the teachers as they do what they do best, and all parents are encouraged to join us.
Please arrive early to the lunch room on Thursday, August 24, to get your class schedule.
The event starts at 6:00 PM, in the Lund Center.

Domesday and Homecoming: Friday, September 15
The name Domesday calls to mind a day of reckoning, a community declaring what it is made of, and what it values most. At the start of Domesday, each new student will be called to membership in a particular House, dedicated by name to a historical figure who embodied particular virtues. For more information on our House system, click here.
On this 12:30 release, September 15, students will engage in a series of House activities with their new members, opportunities for social engagement and friendly competition. The school day will end with a Homecoming assembly and pep rally honoring our student athletes.
Please note that students will remain in normal uniform on Domesday.
After school: There will be a tailgate party hosted by the Parent Organization that evening leading up to the Homecoming football game at 7:00 PM. Stay tuned for updates on these events, including the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, September 16!

European Field Study 2018: Classical Rome and Its Re-Birth.

In coordination with Explorica, an educational travel company, Mr. Nydegger is planning a field study in a part of the world that perfectly overlaps with our classical curriculum: Italy! From May 23 to June 6, students and teachers will travel to Rome, Florence, Venice, and several cities in between, experiencing the best of Classical, Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Italy. We'll study and visit such important Roman buildings as the Coliseum, Pantheon, and St. Peter's Basilica. In Florence, we'll see all the major sights like Michelangelo's David, Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, and the Uffizi Gallery, and we'll climb to the top of Brunelleschi's iconic dome. We'll tour the canals of Venice, visiting St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace. We'll also see Assisi's basilica, Sienna's square, Lucca's walls, and Pisa's leaning tower! With nearly a week in Florence, students will have the chance to interact with that remarkable city's history and culture at a far deeper level than the average highlights tour.
The tour is open to current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, and the tour fee is $5,231, which includes all flights, transportation, entry fees, tours, breakfast, and most dinners. An early bird discount of $150 is available for those who can sign up in the next month. Any and all interested students should indicate their interest by submitting a Preliminary Application. An interest meeting for
students and parents will be held on
Monday, August 21 at 7:00 PM in the library. Please

October 25th, 2017 is PSAT Test day at Veritas!
On Wednesday, October 25th, all Veritas Prep students in grades 9-11 will take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), a practice college admissions test. Scores from the PSAT/NMSQT are never sent to colleges. However, for juniors, the scores are used to determine whether a student qualifies for the National Merit Scholarship program.
For freshmen and sophomores, the test is only practice and allows students to gain exposure and experience with standardized testing for college.

Veritas Prep Presents, in partnership with Kaplan Test Prep, PSAT LIVE ONLINE PREP COURSE
To prepare for the official PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) given on October 25th, 2017 sophomores and juniors are encouraged to sign-up for the Kaplan-taught live online prep course. These online classes are all taught by Kaplan experts. Students will learn the best test taking strategies to help them feel confident come test day. Students will also receive 2 of Kaplan's acclaimed prep books to supplement their course and more than 1,000 practice questions and quizzes on Kaplan's mobile app. Students will also take 2 proctored exams with score analysis to identify areas for improvement and target their prep as well as have access to 20 hours of additional instructional videos to use for some extra prep if needed.

Register Your Athlete:
Tryouts are fast approaching for the fall season: please make sure your child is registered on RegisterMyAthlete.com and they have the necessary forms in or they will not be allowed to participate!
New Website:
This year we have an updated website for all things athletics - schedules, scores, photos, social media and much more!
This site will provide you with all of the information you could ever need regarding athletics. Make sure you go check it out!
Some Helpful Tips:
- Click on the "Alerts" section at the top of the website and register for alerts for your team. These alerts will be very important to the success of our athletic program, so we encourage you to sign up for them either via email, text, or both. Alerts will include schedule changes, announcements from coaches, practice cancellations and more.
- Look for schedules under the fall, winter, or spring sports, choose the sport and click "Schedules and Rosters."
- Go to the Facebook and Twitter icons on the athletics website and follow the schools social media accounts for up to date information!
- If you have photos or videos throughout the year that you would like to share on the website, please contact either your athlete's coach or Assistant Athletic Director Kayla Walsh.
- If you own a business, or know someone that would like to be an ad sponsor featured on the athletics website please contact Kayla Walsh.
