This week's featured speaker is Andy Hayes

ANDY HAYES, PRESIDENT-NORTHERN LAKES ECONOMIC ALLIANCE
Born and raised in Petoskey, Andy's claim to fame is that he has been kicked out of town twice and both times has figured out a way to move back!  But that's another story...

The Northern Lakes Economic Alliance (NLEA) is a four county public /private economic development organization, serving Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan and Emmet Counties. Established in 1984, NLEA's mission is to serve as a resource to help entrepreneurs create and retain jobs.  NLEA accomplishes its mission through an experienced staff team of economic development, community development and business counseling specialists and an impressive network of partnerships that bring additional resources to Northern Michigan.

A fourth generation northern Michigan native, Hayes graduated from Petoskey High School prior to earning a BS degree from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.  Andy and his wife Cindy live in Petoskey, have four grown children and four pretty amazing grandkids.

ONE TIME INCREASE FOR H-2B NONIMMIGRANT VISAS FOR FY 2017
The Departments of Homeland Security and Labor published a final rule on July 19, 2017 that increased cap on H-2B nonimmigrant visas by up to 15,000 additional visas through the end of the federal government's 2017 fiscal year, which ends on Sept. 30, 2017.

This is a one-time increase that will not extend to other fiscal years. It is available to businesses that are likely to experience "irreparable harm" (permanent and severe financial loss) without the ability to employ all of the H-2B workers they request.

This is a high threshold for employers to meet and, while the addition of 15,000 visas is a step in the right visasdirection, the changes are not enough to meet demands for seasonal labor nationwide, and are a short-term solution to a long-term problem.

In addition, the final rule also added an attestation to be submitted by the employer that affirms, under penalty of perjury, that its business will likely suffer irreparable harm if it cannot hire all the requested H-2B workers before the end of the fiscal year.

More information, including how to file an H-2B petition, Here.

The Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance will continue to fight for cap increases and changes to the H-2B nonimmigrant visa program that make it friendlier to manage for northern Michigan businesses struggling to find seasonal labor.

AFTER THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER AT RAVEN HILL
The ancient Romans called the hottest, most humid days of summer "dog
days", because of the star Sirius, which is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Large Dog) in the night sky.  The dog days of summer are traditionally July 3 through August 11.  Now that they are over for 2017, Raven Hill Discovery Center is gearing up to end the summer season with two great events.

Raven Hill's 3rd Annual Technology (TEC) Day is Saturday, August 19th from noon to 4pm.  A variety of technology explorations will be set to challenge families.  While TEC Day is dialing down a bit from last year's NASA in Your Neighborhood event, there is still a lot of fun waiting for kids of all ages.
